imo Trott will come back in playing 11.Subjectively his batting looks class to me and statistically his average is 46.45 whereas that of KP is 47.28 , Alaistair Cook 46.51,Ian Bell - 45.41 who are widely recognized as best available test players in England. There is little difference in performance between him and other prolific tests players of England in this generation. There is little doubt in my mind about his quality. Players come out from severe injuries and maintain their performance.I won't be suprised if Trott over comes from the stress factor or whatever else the reason was to rest and continue averaging above 45 in tests.

"I feel a little bit conned we were told Jonathan Trott’s problems in Australia were a stress-related illness he had suffered for years. We were allowed to believe he was struggling with a serious mental health issue and treated him with sensitivity and sympathy. He was obviously not in a great place but he was struggling for cricketing reasons and not mental, and there is a massive difference. There is a danger we are starting to use stress-related illness and depression too quickly as tags for players under pressure. In his interview with Sky Sports he then completely disrespected anybody who has gone through depression and mental illness by using words such as “nutcase” or “crazy”. We have all said things we regret in the media but I find it staggering he is so ill-informed that he used those words. I have friends who have been diagnosed with depression. They are not nutcases or crazy. They have picked up an illness that is invisible to others but can be debilitating. We have seen other England cricketers suffer from depression and I do not think Trott realises just how important an issue it is. I have no doubt he was going through hard times in Australia but as professional sportsmen playing in a high-profile, intense series such as the Ashes against good opposition you are going to endure stress when your form goes. It is part of the job."

I think the temptation to stabilise the top order will be too great for them to resist, as long as Trott scores heavily early season for Warks... and he will imo.

On the subject of contracts, one thing that may work in favour of Trott's wish to play again for England is that his central contract will be in force until September (I think). After then, even a successful home series for him against this season's tourists may not guarantee him another when his "burnout" happened away from home.

Bairstow has done nothing to show he isn't at least the equal of either of those two, especially Prior, in front of or behind the stumps. He has a few years age advantage over Prior too. Hopefully, he'll get this home series to establish (or not) his batting and keeping credentials.

Career averages are unlikely to be a significant factor in any decision about Trott's England future and there has to be a doubt in the selectors' minds about his ability to cope at international level.

In the last near 30 tests, Trott averages below 40. In fact, he hasnt really been greatly on form since the Ashes in 2010/11, when he scored two hundreds.

There is, therefore, quite a long question on his form before the Brisbane test when he left the squad. His illness and the lack of squad form may have covered what was a sinking ship of a career, his average has been dropping fairly rapidly since the first full year of his career.

Trouble is, no new player bar maybe Root has impressed. I think Trott will return if the management and himself are happy.

We are all rather guessing here , are we not ? Trott obviously feels he is on top of his problems , and wants to get back into the England team ... But how the selectors will feel about this is open to question.

On the one hand , a fully fit for purpose Trott would provide valuable experience and solidity in the top order , which - as has been pointed out above - would make the bedding in of a couple of new players ht much easier. But it might also be felt that bringing back a thirty two year old about whom questions remain , especially about touring , could serve to delay the necessary task of building a new England team ...

It is certainly possible that Trott will be selected for Sri Lanka , or India. But perhaps also possible that they will first try to put some new blood in against the presumed "easier" opposition this summer ; with Trott in reserve if it appears they just aren't ready ? In which case he might even end up resuming his career where he left it - in an Ashes series .

If I were a betting man , I would not be putting money on Trott playing again , given the the way they appear to be looking to the future. But then again , I would have lost my money cold if I had backed my expectation of Pietersen's future after the Ashes tour so what do I know ?

In any case , I wasn't impressed by the tone of Vaughan's article. He seems to put headlines well ahead of any measure of sensitivity ...and in this case I think he rather let himself down. I get that he is on the other side of the fence now , and shouldn't feel constrained from offering robust criticism ; but he might have chosen his words a bit more carefully , especially as he seems on the face of it to have rather limited knowledge of what he is talking about in this case. I think he could take some of Sussex's points on board.

Last 2 years

Trott: 39.92
KP: 42.75
Joe: 36.73 (All career)
Cook: 41.22
Bell: 41.10
Prior: 34.88

Averages of all the England batters have declined in last two years. There is only 3 runs difference between him and England's highest averaging player.Slight difference there in averages.

The answer worth knowing is, why has everyone been struggling. Even new players who initially did well, began to struggle after a couple of series.

Worth remembering that Vaughan has a little history with Trott. He questioned his place in the team as a South African. And he accused him of celebrating a SA win.

I think Vaughan talks more sense about cricket than anyone else around. If you listen to his radio programme, his judgment and insight are remarkable. He deconstructs onfield play with astonishing precision as a commentator. But as a journo, he is pointlessly controversial, and perhaps attention seeking. I wonder if he feels he has to create headlines for this medium, or even if the Telegraph tells him he has to.

I don't think IJLT will start next summer, but may well be tried when we start to struggle. I think I'd be inclined to move the team on a little.

I guess this is made up. But it is a ridiculous idea that you would ask such a question of potential teammates. And people who could have something to gain in the result.

So did Trescothick, apparently, and that didn't end well. The selectors should guard against repeating the mistake.

Of course, Vaughan is looking to further his career in the media with his comments. He is, however, as poor a journalist as he is a commentator, and nobody should take too much notice of him.
