He was sacked from his job, the man who had the power to bring him back didn't get on with him, and as an ageing man who knows his chance is 0.001% in coming back, so he did everything to make sure he could maximise the financial benefit for himself and his family before retirement smacked him in the face.
But that's greedy of him, right? Its not like anyone in the same situation would go for money...
