West Indians retiring from Test cricket

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

West Indians retiring from Test cricket

Postby mikesiva » Sat Jan 31, 2015 9:20 am

First, it was Sammy who called it a day from Tests, but continues to play ODI and T20 cricket....

Now, Dwayne Bravo follows suit:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/westindies/ ... 25559.html

"Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, has announced his retirement from Test cricket, but wants to continue representing the side in limited-overs games. Bravo had not played Tests since December 2010, and his decision comes after he lost the ODI captaincy to Jason Holder and was then axed from the one-day side for the tour of South Africa and also the World Cup. West Indies had pulled out from their tour of India last year under Bravo's leadership over a payment dispute with their board and players association. His subsequent removal from the squad had led to allegations of victimization from his lawyer, but chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd had said there was no axe to grind. Bravo was picked for the T20 internationals against South Africa and was also given a central contract by the board."

That clears the way for him to play the entire IPL....

To me, and my suspicious mind, it seems to be a precautionary retirement, as if to say, don't pick me in April, when England are playing Tests....

After all, last year, he was named in the Test squad for the NZ Tests, but injury prevented his recall.

Whether this retirement will make the Test team worse off is a matter for debate....

Another retirement, though also he wasn't really in the frame for a recall to Test cricket....

http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/67 ... ss-cricket

"According to a report by NationNews, Dwayne Smith, West Indies' and Barbados all-rounder, has retired from First-Class cricket. Smith though, will be available for selection to play for the West Indies in the shorter versions of the game. Smith on his part, said that he retired from First-Class cricket, as he wanted the promising cricketers coming through the ranks to be given a chance to showcase their wares for Barbados."

At least the two Dwaynes are honest...T20 cricket means more to them at the latter stages of their lives than Tests.

I missed that....

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/sports/T ... 92721.html

'Although he is just taking an “indefinite break”, Pollard is still the fourth senior T&T player to pull out of the Red Force first-class team. Earlier this season opening batsman Adrian Barath pulled out of the team saying he, too, was taking a break. And Pollard’s announcement comes on the heels of Dwayne Bravo and Lendl Simmons’ retirement from Test cricket. Simmons is currently in the West Indies ODI team taking part in the ICC World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.'

Both Pollard and Simmons want to ensure Test cricket against England in April doesn't interfere with their plans to play a complete season of the IPL....

'TRINIDAD AND Tobago and West Indies cricketers Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard have both welcomed the appointment of ex-national and WI all-rounder Phil Simmons as the new coach of the regional team.'

http://www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,208935.html

“He’ll get the support and the backing that he needs from the people who are in charge here who hired him so he can be able to actually fulfil his job to the best of his ability,” said Bravo, who was removed as captain and dropped from the WI One Day International team since the ill-fated tour of India in October. “I look forward to playing under him. I don’t know when that will be but I’m still available to represent the West Indies team. I think things will change under his leadership with his attitude and the guys respect him a lot. It’s a good decision and I’m happy.” Asked if he will consider making a return to the Test arena, after announcing his retirement earlier this year, Bravo said, “I already thinking of reconsidering it, but I’ll more look to 2016 to make a return to the longer form of the game. Now it’s official that Simmons is going to be the coach, definitely maybe 2016 I’ll try to get back involved in the longer format and then see how it goes.”

'West Indies coach Phil Simmons has confirmed he is in a much clearer position over the status of high profile players Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Lendl Simmons and Andre Russell, regarding their availability to play Test cricket and other formats for the Caribbean side going forward. Simmons was giving an update on his talks with the aforementioned players after revealing exclusively to Newsday his plans to do so in May. Since Simmons made that revelation, players such as Bravo and Simmons’ nephew Lendl have confirmed in the media that they don’t want to play Tests because of the pay structure in the new MOU/ CBA that was signed by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and West Indies Players Association (WIPA). Russell also stated he can’t play the longer format because of a persistent knee problem. “I have had good discussions speaking with all the players. Yes, Bravo and Lendl said they don’t want to play Tests for reasons you mentioned, but I’m happy that they were honest about that,” said Simmons....“Speaking with Narine during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), he still wants to be 100 percent confident about the consistency of his action before returning to Test cricket. He noted he is happy with the improvement (of) his action during CPL and is available for West Indies in the limited overs section at present.” Narine, with just six Tests under his belt, last wore white clothing for the West Indies two years ago vs New Zealand. Referring to Russell he explained: “Russell has a longstanding knee problem which certainly limits his ability to play the longest format. No one has found a perfect solution for it, but he is trying to get it sorted and he did not give (the) impression that he is against playing longer format,” the 52-year-old highlighted....And on the duo of Gayle and Pollard? “Pollard wants to play cricket for the West Indies - that he made clear to me, but we haven’t gone into whether it’s Test specific. Gayle noted once he recovers well from his back surgery he is also available for all formats.” Having spoken to those players during the CPL, Simmons, who played 26 Tests and 143 one-day internationals for the West Indies from 1988-1999, concluded by giving his thoughts on his first experience observing the T20 league.'

"Ramnaresh Sarwan is set to announce his retirement from international cricket in Guyana on Thursday. Sarwan's last international match was an ODI against India at The Oval during the 2013 Champions Trophy. He has made 286 international appearances for West Indies in his career. Sarwan, 36, who made his first-class debut for Guyana, against Barbados in the Red Stripe Cup of 1995-96 at the age of 15, played the first of his 87 Tests four years later, in May 2000 against Pakistan in Barbados, and scored 84 and 11*. He struck his maiden Test century in his 28th match, against Bangladesh in Dhaka, and gradually cemented his place at No. 3 in West Indies' Test line-up. One of his best performances came in May 2003, in a home Test against Australia in Antigua, where he scored a crucial 105 at No. 5 to help West Indies chase down 418, the highest successful fourth-innings chase in Test cricket. He followed that up by scoring 392 runs in a four-Test series in South Africa, although West Indies lost the series 3-0. Fourteen of his 15 Test centuries came at No. 3, including a career-best 291 against England in Barbados in 2009, which equalled Viv Richards' personal best. His record of 4197 runs from 60 matches is the third highest among West Indies batsmen at No. 3, and he also equalled Richie Richardson for the most centuries by a West Indies batsman at this position - 14. Overall, Sarwan will finish with a Test average of 40.01, having scored 5842 runs in 87 Tests. His last match in the format came in Barbados against India in 2011."

I wasn't aware Sarwan was even playing domestic cricket, let alone international cricket anymore. Has he played a first class game since he left the Foxes a couple of seasons ago? I assume he has a book coming out and needs to get his name in the papers.
