RIP Champions League T20 2008-2015?

Postby ChrisQ » Fri May 15, 2015 7:14 pm

Well the Champions League T20 started off with a troubled history when the very first planned edition of the tournament was cancelled in 2008 as a result of the terror attacks in Mumbai. It finally got off the ground in 2009 and has been played six times since. Now it seems that it is set to be scrapped:

Reports: BCCI planning to replace CLT20 with mini-IPL

According to reports, the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) is all set to replace the Champions League T20 (CLT20) with a mini Indian Premier League (IPL). This comes in the wake of previous reports stating that the CLT20 tournament was set to be scrapped as the popularity of the league had gone into crisis.
Indian Express reported this morning that BCCI is planning to bring in a new T20 league in place for the old CLT20 where top domestic clubs from different cricketing nations participated.

“The planning is on and we will have a meeting on this before this IPL gets over,” a BCCI official was quoted saying.

Earlier, BCCI's general secretary Anurag Thakur reportedly informed the joint owners of CLT20 – Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa – India, about the scrapping of CLT20. The tournament was not seen as a popular league in terms of viewership, and a drastic fall in the numbers was troubling the boards.

“It (CLT20) was not serving any purpose, people weren’t attracted to it. We are looking at all possibilities of a substitute tournament to replace CLT20 and the initial idea is to have an IPL-2 so that Indian crowds could relate more to it,” the official added.

Besides this, it has also been reported that United Arab Emirates (UAE) might get to host the event. UAE hosted the first half of IPL 7 and now teams are quite popular there with the crowds.

CLT20 was launched in 2008 and since its inception four champions have emerged in the editions held till now. Two Indian teams – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – have won the tournament twice each, while Australia's New South Wales Blues and Sydney Sixers have triumphed once each.

Champions League T20 news May 15, 2015 'Planning to do away with CLT20' - Shukla

Kalra: Alternative option required to protect sponsorship interests

Rajiv Shukla, the IPL chairman, has said the BCCI is looking to scrap the Champions League Twenty20. The issue was discussed at the board's governing council meeting in April as a result of limited interest from fans and sponsors.

Shukla said there are thoughts of conducting a different tournament in its place, and that he and BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur are weighing possible options.

"Yes, we are planning to do away with the Champions League T20," he told PTI. "In place of that, we are considering an alternative league. But at the moment all this is at the planning stage.

"Several ideas are coming and honourable secretary and myself are considering those ideas. We will sit together after the IPL gets over and try and plan out something.

"At the moment we don't have anything in hand, but yes we are in the process of bouncing off ideas. When something concrete comes up, we will certainly bring it to everyone's notice."

There have been six editions of the CLT20 so far pitting the top teams of various countries against each other. India, Australia and South Africa are the primary stakeholders of the tournament, while teams from West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been regular competitors.

The major fallout for the teams would be the loss of monetary benefits. CLT20 appearances are included in IPL teams' sponsorship deals and the non-Indian teams receive $200,000.

There have been reports of the top-four IPL teams who make the playoffs this season to play a league-based event leading into a knockout stage to be played in the UAE.

The idea of replacing it with a knock-out phase of the IPL based in the UAE makes sense considering the sponsorship issues discussed in the articles (and the video link in the cricinfo article) above and because for the most part IPL teams have featured prominently in the semi finals and finals of the CLT20 anyway:

* Out of the 17 different teams to make it to the semifinal or further (counting NSW and Sydney as being the same), 7 were from India, 4 from Australia, 4 from South Africa, 1 from West Indies and 1 from England.

* Of the 6 tournaments held so far only two (2009 and 2012) have been won by non-IPL teams and only two (2009 and 2012) have featured exclusively non-IPL teams in the final.

* Only in 2009 did IPL teams not feature at all in even the semi-finals

* Out of 24 team appearances in the 6 tournament semi-finals over the years, IPL teams have made 11 appearances, Australian teams made 5, South African teams made 4, West Indian teams made 2 and English teams made 1 appearance.

Hence an IPL knockout tournament in the UAE would be much cheaper to organize, would still feature most of the top draw teams anyway and should fill stadia (given the South Asian expat population in the UAE) without running the risk of having no locally supported teams featuring in the semi-finals and/or final.

What happens for the other teams?

Well perhaps Australia and New Zealand might eventually set up a Trans-Tasman tournament for their teams. Or maybe set up a southern hemisphere tournament with South Africa (an idea that had been debated before but which went nowhere).

West Indies and England might set up an annual match up for the winners (or maybe the finalists) of their T20 tournaments akin to the defunct Stanford Trans-Atlantic Twenty20 Champions Cup in the Stanford Super Series.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka could set up an inter-domestic match up of their own as well.

What is most likely though is that this will be the end of structured inter-domestic T20 club competition for a while as each country just continues to organize their own domestic tournaments without any linkage between these tournaments.

There really is no need for another IPL. One is enough and you could argue that goes on too long.

Just because there is an empty gap of a few weeks in the international calendar it doesn't mean you have to fill it up with meaningless T20s.

And i'm a massive T20 fan but i don't want it all year round.

Indeed. Agreed.

And that's the reason why I have doubts about the potential success of any Essel group's planned global cricket league.

Tough luck bud, because you see the fans don't really matter. It's the money from the sponsorship deals that do. As the IPL teams' sponsorship deals include agreements on CLT20 appearances then it seems that no CLT20 = less sponsorship money from the deals.

So it seems the sponsors and teams are quite okay with this even if fans get tired of it.
