The new ball hasn't been much of a problem this season, its just what's been happening afterwards.

Dawson seems to have a psychological block when it comes to getting past fifty this season.

He was named in the squad, so I can only presume rested. By all accounts Wheal was very close to playing in our opening game (when Adams was injured, and obviously Bird too, and also Fidel not yet here), but we decided to go with Briggs in the end.

Came down the wicket, tried to clear the ropes, but couldn't even clear the inner ring. He only has himself to blame.

Important that Smith goes on from here. A succession of 30 - 60 scores on the scorecard is fine if you have a 120+ score in there as well. If not, then it's a case of lots of batsmen getting in, but none going on. (But hey, at least they are actually getting in!)

It's tempting to say that Middlesex are the latest in the long line of sides to get all excited at the sight of some grass on the wicket at the Rose Bowl, fooling them into bowling first (so many D2 teams fell for that, clearly having not done their homework). But I hear that bowling first is apparently an actual strategy of Middlesex's this season, when they win the toss - I guess choosing to bowl first at Taunton, of all places, a few weeks ago is evidence that it is a strategy of theirs. An interesting strategy...

It's a tactic used by Durham as well, Somerset chose to bat when we played them but Colly said he'd have bowled in any case because any assistance for the bowlers was likely to be early on ( ironically they batted comfortably for half a day and then collapsed.)

In general the tactic for us is because - according to Jon Lewis - seam bowling is our strength so unless conditions seem perfect for batting we will be looking to bowl.
Risk is that it backfires and you end up having to chase a huge total in the last innings-although Middlesex made light work of doing that at Taunton.

Typical, decent first day for Hants and plenty of rain forecast for remainder of the game. Looks like play might be delayed until late afternoon today.

Quite amusing considering 30 odd is the only score he ever gets!
