I think Brendan declared a bit early (given the fields he will set), before lunch on day four! Fourth innings scores to win are going to be rewritten over the next few years. Very attacking declaration, which is what you'd expect, and what England have forced through winning at Lord's. But the Kiwis favourites of course.

Warne in fact rarely mentions Steve, I wonder why?

Warney didn't like Waugh's captaincy, I don't think that is any secret. I guess you could argue till the cows come home about the merits of someone like Waugh or anyone.... was he a great captain ( certainly seems that way) or was he just the man who inherited a great team of people? Could anyone of captained that team and won (possible)....

I guess what Warne and Waugh's example does prove is, not all successful teams like drinking together afterwards. People react to different people, if I was a cricketer I would react better to laid back approaches then someone who dragged me to Gallipoli and without irony tried to tell me it was in anyway comparable to being a cricketer. Other people would be the opposite.

Yes the drinking together point was brought up by Warne which surprises me that he still has a dislike for Waugh after their careers are over.

I've never agreed with the inheritance argument. I liken it to any business, you still have to run it well no matter how good it was before.

Yes they are great blokes away from the game and Waugh has done an awful lot outside of the game.
I have read several of Waughs autobiographies and I have Gillys massive one sitting on the shelf. I should pick it up if I ever finnish Bill Brysons "A walk in the Woods.

I think deep down Warne feels like he was the greatest captain that never was... mind, despite how much of a prat that he seems, the few examples he has of his leadership seem to be positive. People who played with Warne indicate he had an exception practical cricketing brain.... hard to believe as his mouth has taken over now.

Btw, I think Waugh was a great captain. He seemed to put that team in a mentality to win all the time, and rarely seemed to get things wrong.
