Might as well say the fielding side shouldn't be told where to put their fielders as no one tells the batters where to play their shots. I like the over restriction, as it brings variety, and forces tactical ingenuity, and works against the curse of overbowling. If looking to alter the balance, stop preparing roads, stop using the white kookaburra, even get rid of fielding restrictions. But keep the five bowler rule, which ensures the variety of attack necessary for the five day game is imposed on the limited overs format. The game would be duller without it.

Such is the perennial lot of James Taylor. Left out for someone not in the squad. Dropped down the order to six to accommodate Gary Ballance in the WC. It would be ironic if he is now left out because they don't see him as a number six.
