They should bring out the single greatest performer I've ever seen on a cricket field (better than almost any I've seen). Slipper the Dog.
It was a balmy Friday evening in July 2013, and I had travelled to the Rose Bowl with a friend to see Hampshire vs. Sussex in the T20. The toss takes place as we take our seats, and out comes a large amount of dog performing equipment (tunnels, climbing walls, see-saws etc.). At this point Slipper, a border collie I reckon, is bought out by its owner, "the Great Alfonso" (or something like that). He gives us some spiel about how the dog is going to do this routine to entertain us, all the while Slipper has his eyes firmly fixed on something the other side of the ground. Alfonso removes the leash on which he is holding Slipper, at which point this dog legs it right across the field and down the tunnel where the covers are kept, and doesn't return. Alfonso shouts for him a few times then slopes off, with the equipment removed.
Sussex then come out and bat. At the half-way point back the equipment comes, along with Alfonso and Slipper. Never have I felt a crowd silently leaning forward almost as one going "do it again, do it again" in such a way. Sure enough, Alfonso lets Slipper off the lead and he once again legs it in the same direction and disappears. Now, Alfonso loses it and starts banging on about how he didn't want to have to come to the stupid cricket and how it's all gone terribly wrong. He keeps chuntering (miked up) all the way off the field.
I think Hampshire won, but Slipper the Dog was the real star turn that night. Never laughed so hard at a sporting event in my life.
