Gatting secures himself a place in the team against Durham. He might also have got himself a game tomorrow night (it's quite possible that we'll drop Bird, given how poor he has been in his handful of t20 games).

A complete embarrassment. As as Leicester City supporter I know a Great Escape is possible. The difference is although the Foxes got beaten week in week out for three months, they never capitulated like we are doing. We aren't just loosing, we are getting walloped every week now......

I thought I'd finally face the music and check out just how bad the South group might look for after this evening (or how good - ha!)

Fixtures are Hants (7th) v Surrey (6th), Middlesex (9th) v Essex (3rd), Kent (1st) v Somerset (8th), and Sussex (2nd) v Glamorgan (4th). Gloucs in 5th have the evening off. Sussex, Essex and Glamorgan will each have two games left after tonight, everyone else will have three games left.

If we lose, Essex win, and Glamorgan win, we'll be 3 points behind Sussex and 4 points behind Essex and Glamorgan. So we'll still be in the hunt (particularly because we've still got to visit Sussex, and will have a game in hand on them), but only just. If Somerset win tonight, then we'll also drop down to 8th - so yet another side between us and 4th.

On the other hand, if we win, Kent win and Sussex win (there would appear to be little point in hypothesising a Middlesex win against Essex), then we'll jump up above Surrey and Gloucs, and pull level with Glamorgan in 4th place. Somerset would effectively join Middlesex in being out of the race (which is important, given that we still have to play them).

We need to win three of our final four games, in all likelihood. If we win tonight, I think we have a real chance of that. But the chances of us winning tonight are so remote it is untrue. Winning all of our final three games would be difficult under any circumstances. But on the back of what would have become seven straight defeats in all competitions, it becomes a near impossibility.

I guess we're relying heavily on Wood, Shah and Arafat, who at least haven't been affected by the three Championship maulings.

Real shame that he got hit for those two 6s in his final over, because he bowled really well and didn't deserve his figures to be damaged like that. But hey, that's t20. He'll learn.

Fair play to Benks, Vince and Jimmy. Bring Crane in, promote Wheater up the order, ditch Jimmy. With such a small squad, our options to try and deal with their lack of form and confidence were severely restricted, but we clearly did what we could.

I see that the result has been made even better given the other results. In my opinion (given that I'm not fussed about securing a home QF, I just want any QF), all four South group results went our way today. If we go to Gloucs and win next up, we'll have one massive foot in the QFs now.

Jimmy dropped

Wood injured (or so he claims - he did play in the same 2nd team match as Crane this week; with Crane's wickets in that match no doubt playing a big part in his call up)

Slug is injured for around six weeks, of which two have passed so far. So around about another month.
