I'm not sure we've got much option but to declare at or before 50 overs today. The weather tomorrow looks quite bleak right now, with rain currently forecasted until about 3pm (and then there's the waiting post-rain to consider, whilst the umpires wait until the field is playable).

If we rock along at 4 per over, we should even be able to declare before 50 overs. We're already 242 ahead. A lead of 442 would surely be far too much. We could pull out after 40 overs, with a 400 lead. But if we only go along at 2.5 or 3 per over (which is roughly the run rate of the first two days), then we will probably have to go all the way through to 50 overs. That would leave us with 40-odd overs today and then, what, maybe 25 overs tomorrow if the forecast doesn't improve? I'd rather have the 50-odd overs today though.

I've got no issue with them taking 30 or 60 mins to get themselves in, particularly given our season. We'd have probably lost four wickets for ten runs.

But certainly in the second half of this first session, I want to see them really kick on now that they've both through unscathed.

Looking at the forecast, our season might depend on these 2.3 overs. Or is that too drastic?

I think if we can get 40 overs in (the final 14 of which would be with a new ball), then we would be partly to blame for not winning from here (but no more than 'partly' - at the end of the day, we'd still have been denied the chance of bowl a further 56 overs). But less than 40, and certainly less than 30, and it would be difficult not to feel like we've been shafted over somewhat. But rain in cricket, is rain in cricket.

Latest BBC forecast shows you right on the end of the rain belt which should have cleared by lunchtime anyway. Could be to your advantage by livening the wicket.

Heavy showers spreading from the west so I'll let you know what its doing here and it should be what its doing in Southampton an hour later. Currently overcast with very light drizzle.

If the forecast is right it's doubtful whether we'll see any play before late afternoon, so lets hope its wrong.
