It's getting to the stage where it's kill or cure. Both Durham and England have nursed him long enough and if he breaks down they need to address the problem. Wood himself has admitted he may need surgery.

Bit strange to rest Root.

Every ODI we play is building towards the next WC. We should therefore take all games seriously and pick our strongest team at all times.

maybe they have finally learnt from the trott and pietersen situation that even the batsmen not just the bowlers who play ODI and Tests do need to be rested every now and then

root has been carrying the batting line up for a while now which must put a strain on him even if his personality will never let him show it

The notion that every ODI between now and the next WC three plus years away is nonsense. Many games will be used to help player developement in the international environment and seek the ideal combination of the team. Resting players after an emotionally tiring ashes series is very sensible.

and surely finding out how good your back up players are is very important looking forward to the world cup anyway

without root this series is a big chance for taylor to really establish himself

I like the idea of a team with root and taylor at #3/#4 long term coming in after 2 dashers at the top

if the openers get off to a flier both are capable of scoring quickly, if you lose early wickets you have two guys who can build innings without just going completely into a shell

im still not convinced that taylor can score near or above run a ball against international bowling, this series will give us a good indicator as to whether he has a future in international limited overs cricket

Winning the world cup in cricket is a lot like swimming, you have to peek at just the right time. I agree you can miss plenty of matches over the next three years and still be at your best for the tournament.

Australia have mastered this over the years.
