Great stop from JT. Stats from his knock the other day looked ok, but then again, didn't go on. My hunch is if he's going to get in the side. he needs to oust Morgan. I'd like to see him and Root be the key batters of the new side at 3&4. Both leader types.

100% agree , but after getting the strauss seal of approval I don't see morgan being dropped any time soon

Morg's form isn't all that reliable. Still, if Taylor keeps posting better scores it may add up to something. He averages 44.5 against top eight sides.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

Stats from last two years against top eight. Not many games from Taylor. Lots of fifties, not many tons (sounds familiar).

You just love trying to oust Captains , don't you , Arthur ? Isn't Clarke enough of a scalp for one season :)

Seriously ; I didn't sit up for the England innings the other night so didn't see Taylor bat. But I do like him as a prospect. Bit disappointing he didn't go on after doing the hard work ? Not that he was the only one...

Seems to me England's problem in these ODis , if they are going to field first from choice , is that even when they have early control they seem unable to translate that into cleaning up the deep Australian batting lineup. Which means they'll be constantly chasing 300 - or thereabouts. And at this stage of their development I reckon they can pull that off one in four tops against a good bowling attack. (Especially absent Root)

Suppose it is all good practice for the future. So taking the long view , fine. But a bit daunting for now. Would have liked to see Willey play tonight.

it does but he hasn't had a run of games in the side to see if he can improve his game and make that step up

Not the captain I was going for. Misdirected voodoo. :(

I didn't see the knock either, on nights. But 49. Gets to fifty (ish) really reliably. No tons, but nearly made one v Aus last winter. Wasn't helped by being moved down to six in the WC. He's not a number six, it's hard to understand why he was put there, and there are good alternatives for that spot.

Aus on for 350? Could get messy.

You weren't going for Clarke ? You and George Bailey ? He might not have been your prime target , but...

Taylor is indeed a three in ODI , if he is anything. Can work with Root four and Morgan five ; but probably means Moeen opening. Which works in Asia...

We shall see.

didn't take enough wickets when we had them under pressure in the first 10-15 overs

350 is a long way off tho AC , they would need almost 10 per over from here

one thing I really don't get is with david willey being the man in possession from earlier in the year why he was dropped to accommodate woakes coming back , its not like wokaes has really covered himself in glory in this format and willey did pretty well I thought

Rotation , isn't it , rich ? Still with two left armers in the squad you'd think they'd have one in from the start...Reckon Willey will play next match.

Surely long term it's Stokes that is most vulnerable unless he starts to show he can bat so high in the order. He might end up competing with Woakes and Willey down the order.
An order at 3, 4 & 5 could happen.
Taylor
Root
Morgan
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

I suppose Plunkett is there as more of a middle over wicket taker, sort of a Freddie, but not as economical.

Like a lot of England bats, JT didn't really time the ball in that game in Australia with the extra pace and bounce, and looked rushed. But he still found a way to make what would have been a ton but for umpire error on a run out.

Fair enough, ten an over is too many to predict, but that the sort of runs that are scored these days when wickets are in hand.

did he really needed rotated ? the last ODI was months ago and England are usually loathe to change a winning team, just think after all this time they have been looking to get a left-arm seamer into the side it was a strange decision
