Interesting BBC sport are taking the stance that Stokes out marred the game, and Morgan suggested that had England been fielding they wouldn't have appealed.

Vaughan said Stokes was protecting himself. I've yet to see it, but it sounds like he was protecting the stumps.

The rule says "willfully" obstruct the field. I think the umpire and the Aussies are giving Ben Stokes some credit if they think he could make a decision to intentionally block the ball in 0.3 seconds, and to be fair, still making contact with the ball while throwing himself into a spinning pirouette.

I wouldnt have given it out, myself. If these types of dismissals are going to be given, then every time a bowler tries to intimidate a batsman who is in the crease by throwing it past him, or pretending to throw should levy an equivalent punishment.

The only decision the 3rd umpire had to make was whether Stokes was protecting himself or his stumps hence the call for the slow motion. Aussies were entitled to appeal but it does expose the hypocrocy of their claim to maintain the spirit of cricket.
