I can understand the decision from the third umpire after watching the slowmo but I think if he only had the real time view to watch his decision might have been different. But as Frank Sinatra put it, "It was just one of those things".
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Starc totally within his rights to try and run Stokes out, who was out of his ground.
All the stuff about split second reaction time is straying off the point - that's the speed at which decisions are made by players all the time at this level - a decision which Stokes got wrong on this occasion. I totally agree with GarlicJam.

The most vulnerable persons on the field are, according to Rod Marsh in his recent Cowdrey Spirit of Cricket MCC lecture, the umpires, who have no protection whatsoever. When the ball is hit straight back at them they try and avoid it - they don't put their hand out!

The Lords crowd booing were a disgrace to the home of cricket.

Smith certainly doesn't deserve the agro he's getting and no doubt will be booed when he next comes out to bat.

Morgan should have never said that He wouldn't have appealed either. He's only trying to achieve one thing there and that's to further make Smith look bad. Some of these bloke are ridiculously immature.

There is a complete and utter difference to being in position anticipating a ball being thrown from 22 yards, and a bowler throwing from 10 yards away when you are already moving your body forward and have yet to react. To suggest in these fraction of a seconds that Stokes realised he was about to be run out, and reacted by successfully throwing his arm in the way of the ball in a mind boggling argument. The rule states wilful, ie Intention to cheat, not reckless, not negligent.... he had to mean to cheat.

Gigi Buffon in his absolute pomp having saved a ball on the floor would not have reacted that quickly and accurately to a second shot, and a football is 10 times bigger.

I have no doubt that Stokes had reacted to knowing he was out of his ground, but how does one turn quickly when their weight is going the wrong way? You see many people in football turning on a six pence with their arms jammed to the side?

You think people who know they are about to be hit, or anticipating they are going to be hit, think with such an accurate clarity in 0.2 seconds?

Its pure instinct. It can be nothing else.

As he gets up his shoulders appear slumped and the look on his face isn't exactly encouraging.

Two reactions are going to happen after an incident like this, you either get angry and start giving abuse to the bowler, or you walk off sheepishly in the other direction.

thing is everytime I watch it in fast motion it's difficult to decide 100% exactly what he was thinking.

Just read this on cricinfo,

"Certainly, I think it would've been a lot different if we were fielding," said Morgan, who also revealed he'd Dharamasena had told him the on-field umpires didn't believe it to be out.

Seriously that should be a suspension if Dharamasena really said that, and why would Morgan reveal it.

I like this article from George Bailey of "The Savings and Loans";

"George Bailey says Eoin Morgan's statement that he would not have appealed the controversial Ben Stokes wicket on Saturday means the England captain would be expected to call back any other player wrongfully given out in the future".

Can't find anything about this on BBCsport or anywhere else for that matter. I find it flabbergasting that this could be brushed over. :shock:

Found this on Yahoo.

Morgan said he was told by the on-field umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and Tim Robinson, that they thought Stokes was not out - and gave a 'soft signal' to the third umpire Joel Wilson - but Wilson felt there was conclusive evidence to uphold the Australian appeal.

If the umpires were stupid enough to tell Morgan that they thought the third umpire got it wrong then they probably didn't even know what Australia was appealing for.

Just found this article;

The on field umpires during the Stokes incident had original thought Australia were accusing Stokes of ball tampering.
