The ECB rules state that you have to have played a test in the last 12 months, or 5 in the last 5 years (or 15 limited overs games) to qualify for a work permit, or be in the most recent squad or central contract from a board.

The only exception, is that players contracted in 2014 to a county that dont meet the above are allowed to sign anyway, so Hasting and Klinger would have.... and I guess Fidel played enough inside the 5 year period.

I played cricket in my teens and twenties and I had great reflexes so they often had me fielding at short leg where I took many catches including two memorable full blooded sweep shots. One of the guys I caught off his sweep turned to me and said in a real deep Tassie accent "that's bull$#!^".

I guess you could right the catches off as flukes, but even as I look back 30 years I can still see a flash of the ball coming to me. I stuck my hands up and next thing the ball was in them and everyone was going crazy. That was club cricket, not the international scene.

Sounds like you probably caught the ball in your jumper but over the years your failing memory and vivid imagination has caused you to embellish the story!

I really must took a look at this Stokes incident, wonder what over of the Australian innings in the next game we will have the first effort by the England bowler to run the batsman out.

No idea how Klinger got one though unless he got some EU links and so he wouldn't need a work permit just like football.

What a shame Stokes couldn't fess up, still I'm not surprised in the least. He's only a 20 year old and perhaps one day he might have the courage to tell the truth.

All this is going to achieve is to get the Aussies extremely peeved off and I'm exspecting match fines at the next ODI.

Stokes is 24years old and certainly doesn't lack courage. He's answered questions put to him by the media. Did you ever get hit on the head when you were fielding at shortleg in your youth?

A 20 year old qualifies as 24. 20 years old qualifies as 20 years old.

I've never been hit on the head, but you'll have to ask Mark if he has. I'll be straight up with ya though, he's likely to call you a flamin drongo.

Well, he was signed before the law was changed, so he can renew his work permit based on the fact that he fell under the law in 2014.

he was the man in possession from the NZ series , had done enough to justify his place, at least over a guy who has been less than impressive for most of his ODI career anyway
