Surprised by how well Morgan has done this summer, but have to accept he's been pretty key.

Can't really be that surprised, he's been class for England at the shorter forms of the game for many years now.

At the risk of over enthusiastically championing James Taylor, it looked like a nicely contrasting hitting innings from the rotation of the strike ton in Manchester. Hard to get him and Root in the team, but I'd guess eventually these two will be at 3&4.

Must admit I have changed my mind about him slightly in view of these last two innings, however, I may be being sizest , but I just can't see him as a major England player in the future due to his diminutive stature, too big a disadvantage for him at international level.

I just watched a replay of Maxwell's catch on/over the boundary line. I thought that it wasn't a fair catch, as when he re-took the ball, he came from outside the field without putting at least one foot back on the field of play.

Not that it affected the result but it may well matter to whoever it was he 'caught'.

If you read Law 19 through it does not say anything about re establishing yourself in the field of play. In fact it illustrates pretty exactly what happened with the Maxwell catch yesterday therefore confirming it was legal.

He's had a good couple of matches though. Completely different types of innings too, and both times he took exactly the right approach for the situation. He clearly has ability, good technique and he has a brain too...... a heady combination

Yes I see that his claimed height is 5 foot 6. Can't believe it myself, he doesn't look much bigger than Ronnie Corbett, sorry!

Surely the ball should have to strike the ground, part of the stadium or threaten the life of a spectator before it's a six.

Or clear the boundary. Once the fielder steps over the rope it should be a six. The rest is just showbiz.

or hit the overhanging branch of a tree at St L, or the roof of the testradome, or the undercarriage of a passing UFO?

could be lots of ways to hit a six.

In the two years leading to this summer, he averaged 25 against top eight sides at a SR of 81. Before that it was 40 at a SR of 91. He was arguably England's best ever ODI bat, but hadn'tbeen in that class for a long time. His leg side game had left him relatively shotless to sides who just slanted the ball across him. He still edges a lot of offstump balls through the slips. It took about fifty games for me to feel he definitively wasn't the player he was, so it takes more than a summer to flip flop on that conclusion. He's had little pockets of form over the generally poor two years. So we'll see. I thought he should have been moved on after the WC though.

I wondered whether the catch should be a six but when I saw it in slow motion I felt it was the right decision even though it seems odd.

After all if the fielder was standing still on the boundary edge and the ball just went past him but he had enough to stretch his arm behind him and catch it that would have been out as long as he didn't touch the rope.


Morgan seems a new player after taking a month off from cricket. Maybe they should all try it.
