A good day for Yorkshire after being put into bat on a wicket that was doing everything and had plenty of bounce. Lees tried to play a top edge shot, but the ball rose/sat and found the slips. Ballance tried to leave a ball but hit the bottom edge of his bat. Adam Lyth played with real discipline and did well to get to lunch, even if Fidel Edwards put down a tough chance off his bowling.
Conditions improved after lunch and Bairstow looked in fabulous touch, playing well timed shots across the park and Lyth started to motor on, though he did survive a tough drop in the gully region as he got past 50. Fidel Edwards might have been a bit expensive, but he was unlucky not to get a wicket and he got two deliveries to pop up on a length that looked like going through Lyth's helmet (maybe that is why the ECB do insist on Cook wearing the latest helmet)
As the cloud rolled in, this prompted Ervine to come on and Hampshire blagged two wickets of Lyth (111) and Leaning (a pittance) before bad light ended play early for Yorkshire to finish 270-5. Just as well play was delayed by 30 minutes, otherwise Hampshire may have got Yorkshire all out for around 200.
