On Saturday, Guyana eliminated Barbados from the CPL by beating them by six wickets with three balls remaining. Kieron Pollard made 47 from 36 balls, and there were 30s from Shoaib Malik and American Steven Taylor, as Barbados posted 158-6. Sohail Tanvir took two wickets for Guyana. Jason Mohammed and Chris Lynn then hit 57s to guide Guyana to victory. Medium pacer Raymon Reifer took two wickets.
It is no surprise that the two teams with the least amount of national representation failed to advance. As Russell said above, players get extra impetus from playing for their country, and Russell's country is Jamaica, not the West Indies. The only Bajan player who seemed to play with any passion on Saturday was unsurprisingly Reifer. The four teams in the playoffs built their team around a group of locals.
Jamaica - Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Chadwick Walton, Rovman Powell
St Lucia - Darren Sammy, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher
Trinidad - Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Kevon Cooper
The Guyanese players are not key to their team, but they provide the support work. They are players such as Permaul, Bramble, Barnwell and Jacobs. Next season, Barbados would be well-advised to keep Reifer, and to bring back players such as Dwayne Smith and Jonathan Carter.
Nobody has a stance quite like the mighty Shivnarine....
