Don't know why Borthwick has chose Surrey, they don't develop bowlers. Either flog them to death (The Curran's or Rampaul) or underbowl them (Burke, Dunn)

Given that Borthwick must be thinking of getting in the Test team (I can't imagine he's going to get in a limited overs side) who was the last Surrey player to make a debut for England in Tests? I'll look it up in a while, but has it happened this century? Batty was at Worcs when he first played (he's the only current Surrey player with a Test cap for England). Maybe Tremlett? Don't think he first played while at Hants.

Tremlett was at Hants when he made his debut. So that takes us back to Ian Ward. Unless Chris Jordan was at Surrey then. Which I don't think he was.

I'm looking this up now. Jordan wasn't at Surrey. It was Rikki Clarke with two caps, and Ian Ward with five caps. That's it for this century.

James Ormond made his debut at Leics. Usman Afzaal and KP at Notts. Chris Schofield at Lancs. Ed Giddins at Warks.

Next Surrey debuts are the Hollioakes.

If Borthwick thinks Surrey is a gateway to playing for England, maybe he was misinformed. I reckon over a dozen Yorks players have made an England debut this century.

My guess is the only real gateway is a broad one, and that is, playing in CC1.

Only reason I knew was because there was a list in one of the articles about Durham's relegation. Can't find the article now but just remember Surrey had no one on it!
