Runs scored away from home in Asia until Boycott's retirement.

Always good to see DA doing well, Greig is a bit of a surprise and I was right about KB. The Windies played India a lot more than other sides,

Was it really tough as today pitches considering more than 50% of the matches end in draws and a lot of dull matches.
9 consecutive draws in the 1960 in india.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... 3100_Tests
5 draws in 1963/4
4 draws the next year
loads of draws in 1978.
lots of draws in early 80s as well.
it is only really in the 90s, 00s and this decade that most of india test matches at home resulted in a result.

Scoring was extremely slow. Pakistan games were shortened due to lighting issues. I think they tried six five hour days at one point. My memory is that the 600v600 games only started in the nineties. Or became much more common then.

Looks like there were only two scores of 600 plus in Asia in the seventies. One by India, one by WI.

probably different perception since I always thought the olden days as the 600 play 600 and hearing and reading stories of how dead and boring the game were brought the perception that it was mostly teams batting till day 5.
although wouldn't quicker scoring rate make it more likely to score 600 more easily and have more time for both sides to score 600.

although only 6 draws in 90s and 3 of them in one series where the 600 play 600 was made famous, the dead tracks against Sri lanka with Jayasuriya scoring triple hundreds.
loads of draws in the naughties, but not many since 2011.

guessing the run rate is a crucial factor.
scoring 600 at 4 runs an over takes 150 overs.
scoring it at 2 runs an over takes 300 overs.
suspect it would take 2 and half days to score 600 in the 70/80s.

Think most of the 600-600 was during the naughties when Sehwag and aggressive batsman can score at a quick lick and more teams scored 500 or 600 in the first innings, until the spinner came into play.
scoring 3 or 4 runs is a norm now so they only really needed to survive 150 or so to get it.

Interesting trends though, especially around 90s, where the ball was turning a lot in India probably the closest it is to the pitch now in India.

some odd omission.
No vijay and broad is baffling.

Cook
Pujara
Root
Kohli
Rahane
Stokes
Bairstow
Ashwin
Jadeja
Anderson
Shami

Might have included Saha ahead of Bairstow but that a questionable swap.
would have been nice if Vaughan gave some comments, hard to criticise the team without knowing his reasoning.

Very strong team though and a very long batting line up Jadeja at 9 and 5 bowlers as well.

Indian pitches for me change not long after 2000's series. The aforementioned Jayasuriya 300 game (and series) was played in Colombo, so not really relevant. In the 1990's the pitches in India were slow and low, occasionally spun, but most teams picked spinners on reputation and the fact that seamers got little. But for batsman, it was still hard to score because of the pace in the pitch, in fact if I had to compare a pitch in those days the Nagpur pitch in the last England series largely sums it up, with the 1 out of 3/4 pitches breaking up and really spinning.

Looking at the figures, India score big runs vs England in 1993, but in tests where Ian Salisbury and Graeme Hick bowl 60 overs in an innnings (500 seems incredibly undervalued, even on the most spin friendly pitch possible), they score 600 vs Australia in 1998 but the scorecard indicates that the Aussie team bus carrying their world class bowlers crashed on the way to the ground, its a C team line up with Shane Warne (Greg Blewitt, a number 3 bat and very part time medium pace, is seemingly picked as a specialist seamer, just to give you an indication).... and they pumell Zimbabwe and a Sri Lanka team yet to win a test match.

In games against Windies, they average exactly on the historical innings value for the home team since 1932. And they average well below vs Pakistan and South Africa.

Essentially, when they play decent bowlers, low scores or average scores seemed pretty normal. The overall decade score is up on history, but then at no other point in history did India have such a massive depth of world class batsman.

Good point not sure England or Australia picked the greatest squad or bowling attack.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/co ... 23022.html
Gavin Robertson wasn't even fit for test cricket at the time.
plus india didn't really play much Test cricket in the 90s.
Think tendulkar only played about 64 Test in that time which would probably be around 30 test at home which probably averages 3 test a year.
England toured only once, Australia only once, pakistan barely toured either because of political tensions, WI only toured once as well in the 90s.

just saw the aussie squad in 1998 was Bradman the selector or something that some awful bowling attack seriously only Warne can be claimed to be an aussie Test standard bowler, Kasprowicz the other but he probably was young and making his career at the time.
