As you said, AC, so many aspects to consider - leader, tactician, inspirer-in-chief, man management, national representative, lead batsman (or bowler, or keeper..), and a few others that I hadn't considered like legacy and direction of team, etc.
Each of the above two excelled in different areas to each other and fell down in different areas.
For what it is worth, I would have probably gone with Waugh, Ganguly and Vaughan.
Each of them fulfilled the ROLE of captain excellently - the JOB of captain, they also did quite well, but they all understood the importance of their role as captain.
