Buttler isn't even in the test team. The chances of him getting the test captaincy are very very small.

I'd be shocked if it isn't Root.

Age group England. Handful of Yorkshire games. England when Cook was off the field asking Moores what to do through a locked door.

so Root has almost no experience, but more than everyone else; 2 of the most experienced players don't make the poll, yet 4 of the poll choices aren't even in the team.

that is not a criticism of the poll... more a criticism of the mess England find themselves in re the captaincy...... yet that is still better than leaving Capt Hopeless in charge

and it's a current England trend..... take a player with no captaincy experience and make him captain. The conspiracy theorist in me would suggest that that has the advantage of keeping all decision making in the dressing room

Two most experienced? Broad's there. I could have added Anderson I suppose. Feels like he's near the end but he's more likely than a few of these. Keaton Jennings is the next captain. He can mend a sail in a wind.

Voted for YJB just for the hell of it ...

Think it is pretty sure to be Root and I've no problem with that. As long as his batting doesn't suffer I think he'd be a sound choice and we can't know that until he tries. Tactics won't change dramatically as coaches set much of the plan these days so the main thing is keeping spirits up on the field and making sure the players are with you - and I reckon Root will have few problems in that.

But I see from Arthur's extract of averages that Stewart did as well as captain as not so my Bairstow option isn't perhaps unthinkable...

Alec averaged 37.2 when captaining as keeper (12 games, one ton). He averaged 46 as captain when not keeping, but only three games (one ton). Not much to go on.

Bairstow could easily be replaced as keeper anyway and play as a batter only. So more likely if he became skipper.

VC will probably be Stokes. Why not one of the bowlers though?

I guess unless we're voting for Root here, we're probably voting for the VC. Apart from Bell and KP.

I guess that means I see Stokes as a batter, and Woakes of England as a bowler.

I haven't got a problem with Root being named captain and Stokes as vice...think that's probably common sense tbh.

from the sound of it daily mail don't like root.
probably 3rd or 4th sly dig charles sale has had on root in the past two-three weeks and the latest suggest inside knowledge that he used to twist things.
"England Test cricket captain elect Joe Root is still considered somewhat unreliable by members of the backroom staff. The star batsman, 26, is often one of the last to have his bags packed and ready for collection on tour.

But Root does not consider such off-field logistics as especially important in the grand scheme, preferring to devote all his energy and focus to what happens out in the middle."
also reported Woakes/stokes missing ireland game.
