Onwards with the selection meeting. We need two keepers from the list.

Foakes could be an outside bet.

I went for Foakes. He seems to be maturing as a player

I have no idea what his glove work is like, but that doesn't seem to matter these days

I'd take Bairstow too, but mainly as a batsman who can take the gloves in an emergency

I wouldn't touch Buttler with a bargepole in tests

afaik he is a keeper who has worked on his batting rather than a batsmen learning to be a keeper

Improving as a bat. He has a good chance.

My Surrey friends tell me he is excellent with the gloves ; and as Arthur also noted , rapidly improving with the bat. They may be a little biased , but still...

Will they be prepared to ditch Buttler though ? Coach seems to be a fan.

Looking at this squad of 16 I am wondering if it will end up being a little like the one that went (rather unsuccessfully) to India : no real top order bats included as alternates if the first choice players fail. Will they really take three spinners plus Stokes and five other pace men ?

we did have backup batsmen in India tbh, just they were Duckett and Ballance who at the time were seen as worse options than playing Buttler as a specialist bat

I don't think they'll take three spinners, but as one of them is Moeen who is batting at four (and the keeper is batting at five, and one of the pace bowlers is batting at six) there is room for one. With that 4-5-6 the squad could become choked with top order bats who aren't going to play and arguably bring down the overall level of quality. Maybe I'll add a seventeenth spot for a back up.

Given Buttler doesn't play fc cricket, it might be sensible to leave him out the Ashes squad.

Bump, any changes with the official announcement nearer now? That goes for batter/spinner/pace bowler too.

I need to change the underlined part. Absolutely the number 1 wk choice... nailed on, no question... rest might as well stay at home unless YJB gets injured
