Joe's captaincy watch

Now we've had a decent handful of Tests (and a shade of criticism) about our new England captain; what is your verdict?

He's been following the ball a bit with his field placings

But I liked the aggression of his decleration

Though with us losing I imagine he may not have the faith in his bowlers and fielders to do it again

The missing/floating first slip today was a Cook cover version. But I think his bowling changes and fields feel less like cramming of GCSE captaincy modules. There's more of a Vaughan like narrative in the field. If he was instrumental in bringing Ballance back though, perhaps he erred.

All the pitches so far have offered something for the bowlers to work with. Usually a lot. It's going to be harder on flat pitches of course, so we've not seen him on PlanZ yet.

Should have stuck with Roland-Jones. Saying Woakes hasn't had enough bowling in the previous match and then playing him when he has had no more bowling. Would have been better for Woakes to have played the match v Lancs and come back at Lords.

Should have bowled Stokes more and told him to bowl dry as in the first innings (25.0-9-63-2 econ 2.52) rather than short pitched bowling and only using him for 5 overs.

Should have had a third man for most of the innings and he bowled Broad and Anderson at the wrong ends for a spell.

I reckon Cook's advice will have been "I told you we needed 500 more runs"

Atherton had an interesting article in The Times - he said he thought Root should have declared earlier to give the bowlers more time at the end of the penultimate day to get wickets. His theory was the Windies were demoralised and a longer/more meaningful spell of bowling at the end of the day may well have led to wickets before the close.

Blotted his copy book for me today.

Was most eminently playing for a draw when the win was still on the cards.

Since this thread was last touched I have come to the conclusion that Joe and captaincy do not suit.

He lacks creativity, flexibility and belief (in others and ((increasingl)) himself).

This has all come to a head twice over the last two days. Batting instead of taking the ball was the safe option. And he took it. Holding Wood back was the safe option as Anderson and Broad are the conventional opening bowlers and disregarding the fact that the Pakistani batsmen would have struggled with a bit of pace against them.

All a bit amateur hour I'm afraid.

Showed poor batting acumen today and abshow of petulance.

Oh Joseph!

Did Joe decide to bat after what happened in Adelaide? He had faith in the bowlers there and they did not deliver.

Maybe because the last few Tests there have been low scoring. Last year against SA Root scored a big ton batting first and Moeen took ten wickets. Historically, that's not the pattern of a Lord's Test, but it has been recently. But I think England would be kidding themselves if they thought the toss was a factor. Pakistan played better in the conditions and would have won batting first too. England just aren't that good.
