Has been a tricky series for openers. (Brathwaite has the two big hands at Headingley and a string of failures. ) Still I am a little surprised he didn't go on at least in one other innings - as he actually got a start each time. Looked settled today until Bishoo surprised him.

Root's streak is over , alas - even if he gets a hit now he can't get fifty :(

Westley goes to twenty with a nice firm drive for four.

He plays some lovely shots . But so did Vince...

Even if he should bat through here , I wonder if he hasn't left it too late to impress ? Stick with him or go back to someone like Robson for Australia...going to be an interesting selection meeting before they decide that Ashes party.

Stoneman isn't doing himself any harm with this knock.

Seems like Mark and Tom will get average boost due to being not out in this innings.

And thoughtfully finishing this reasonably early so I can get some sleep...

Fine (northern) summer of Test Cricket . Good result in the end for England and some hope (and one Hope !) for West Indies.

Break open the :pint

Not sure any of the new players look quite as out of their depth as Vince did. Their shot selection isn't great and might improve with international exposure. Credit to Stoneman for seeing off the new ball, but these seem fairly soft runs for Westley. I'm going to take Stoneman and Malan for making fifties in spite of trying to break the accumulating pressure with occasional rash shots. I'll leave out Westley.

Arguably, WI got more out of the series than England. They won (and England lost) a game that wasn't expected. They came out of the series with a bowling attack, and the batting of Hope, which was outstanding in difficult conditions. Though Chase was a big negative.

England plucked out three new batters and none of these enhanced their reputations. And if that reflected poorly on the selectors, that was reinforced by the unsuccessful recall of Woakes. Bairstow and Moeen didn't have good series. England lost early wickets every time. England's big bonus was the bowling of RJones. Perhaps also, the consistency of Stokes.

Job done by England. In fact, from 99-3, today couldn't have gone much better for them. Hope's resistance was the only high point for WIndies.

But it leaves a bit of a hollow feeling. On paper, it's been a successful summer, with two series wins, including against the number 2 ranked South Africa side. England move up to number 3 in the rankings, and are now ahead of Australia. However, it does not feel as though they have really made any progress as a side over the last 12 months, or even 2 years since Bayliss took over. They are still over reliant on the same few high performers, the same selection issues persist, the same lack of a high quality spin attack, for all the value Moeen adds to the side. The only find of the summer has been Roland-Jones, who has certainly earned himself a trip to Australia, but the batting stocks remain thin at the top of the order beyond Root and Cook, who has consistency issues of his own.

On paper, England ought to be confident of at least a competitive series against an Australian side that is also quite flawed, and who they are ranked ahead of. So why do I have that sinking feeling that normal service (i.e. a thumping) will ensue in Brisbane?

Can't see England winning against Starc, Haze and Cummins. And Lyon. They'll be far too reliant on Root, Stokes and Bairstow. And the England bowlers could easily toil.
