According to The Times the Somerset chief executive has told their members that the ECB had assured them it was only hearing the Middlesex appeal because ( in his words) " they need to be seen to be going through a process" but he was unconcerned about the potential outcome!

The Cricket Discipline Comission are it again! Bad enough when they tried to make an example of Andrew Gale, but to interfere with the competition two weeks after conclusion and dragging up an incident when four rounds of cricket were played since is something else.

An appeal and final outcome should have been decided until the next round of matches. Other teams as well as Somerset were involved in a relegation battle and that two points difference was significant to the County Championship run-in.

Given that the domestic fixtures are usually released in six to seven weeks time, any team affected by a successful Middlesex appeal will have little time to launch an appeal of their own and receive an outcome.

Sums the situation up well.

Seems as if the ECB are just making it up as they go along. First by insisting there was no appeals process only to change their mind and have one.
It's just incompetence , there was always a good chance 2 points might be crucial with so many teams within a few points of each other so the ECB should have been proactive and sorted it out one way or another before the final round of games.
If Middlesex are correct and the points deduction was a clerical error they should get the points back but Somerset don't deserve to be relegated either so it is a shambles.

The Middlesex claim that they intended to declare doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The stoppage was at 4.35 with Middlesex 180 ahead with 31 overs remaining. That would be a no win situation for them and they'd have to complete those 31 overs in 75 mins to gain parity on overs I.e. 25 overs per hour. Not a realistic scenario.
I note also the Gale Kolpakgate rears it's head again. Fact is Gale slandered ECB with his outburst and should consider himself fortunate not be charged with such.

at least with Middlesex relegated we won't have to play on that scabby old piece of nonsense at Taunton. Expect FTECB to engineer some way of applying a pitch related points deduction to Somerset next year to give them the very best chance of being relegated themselves, so if we can find a way to get promoted, we won't have play there the season after either

Derbyshire have signed Ravi Rampaul from Surrey. A 3 year deal and that seems a risky one - I thought he was just about finished several years ago. Must have had a new lease of life , probably won't be too expensive either so that minimises the risk.

you might be surprised at what a cheap overseas player costs these days

I nearly fell over when I discovered that England central contracters earn 700K before they start earning bonuses

I'm sure Harmy and co were on 250K, and that would only have been in 2009

You're almost certainly right - I had no idea how lucrative central contracts were so no doubt they will have had the effect of raising salaries across the board.

He's been doing a good job for Surrey in one-day cricket. Coming on as first or second change, after the Curran brothers have had a burst, with a mixture of tight bowling and short balls. I guess Surrey now have Rikki Clarke to fill that role for next season.

But in terms of four day cricket, yes I wouldn't be getting too excited as a Derby fan.

And I think Harker negotiated a lower annual salary in exchange for a long term contract! At least that was his defence when it became apparent the deal was a disaster! So the likes of Benks and Diva may even have been on more than 20k-although they were certainly worth it.

I thought at the time that could be the only justification for a 4year contract. Some 15 years ago a minimum salary for a capped player was £36k with annual salary increments. Bearing in mind the salary cap is £2m, and that includes add ons, only exceptional players can be on anything like £200k.
Interesting article on 2012 salaries.
