It was on Sunday but I'm still buzzing, and we won every game as well. There were 8 teams entered in the 7 year old age group and these were split into 2 groups of 4 playing 6-a-side 6 over matches and the winners of each group would contest the final. We won all 3 group games, the first by 31 runs, the second by 74 runs and the third by 39 runs.
Having won all 3 group games we were looking forward to the final against a side that had also won all 3 of their group games, so a tough final beckoned. There was a standout moment when RD Jr came out to bat and the opposition (who'd been paying attention to our games) immediately went to their best bowler who came off a long run and had his first ball lofted straight back over his head for a boundary by RD Jr
. At the end of the match they'd saved their best batters for the final push, but I'd saved our best 2 bowlers as well so RD Jr came on to bowl the penultimate over and bowled a wicket maiden that basically sealed victory. We won by 18 runs.RD Jr finished the comp with 3-5 off 5 overs; the other boys had solid figures too like 4 overs 0-13, 3 overs 0-10, 4 overs 0-16, 3 overs 0-16, 3 overs 0-17 and 2 overs 1-6
RD Jr also scored 24 off 16 balls, one of the other boys scored 26 off 17 balls and another scored 13 off 21 and one scored 11 off 12 balls, although the other 3 struggled a bit with 3 off 8, 2 off 7 and 1 off 12.
One of the key differences was the fielding, we managed to pick up 9 run outs during the comp and only suffered one ourselves. the other big difference was the number of wides that other teams sent down - we got lots of extras, whereas I've been pretty harsh on our boys in training and they tend to bowl reasonably properly. also, the other teams were often throwing rather than bowling, but the umps gave up trying to address that!
Overall, a pretty awesome first comp as a coach
