Ashes Series - Women

Postby GarlicJam » Sun Oct 22, 2017 2:51 am

I am surprised that there isn't a thread already for this.

Being in Aus, at least the One Dayers are on fta telly. It has started already, Aus win the toss (Alan Border Field in Brisbane) and send England in. After a decent start, Aus has managed to contain them pretty well.

Currently England are 5/191 with 7 overs left in their innings.

A bonus for England is that Aus' best player, captain Meg Lanning - is out for the whole series with a shoulder injury. Rachel Haynes steps in as captain.

I thought Aus did pretty well in the field to restrict England, they had several starts but no-one really got going.

However, England have struck back and it looks as if it's going to be a cracking second half of the Aussie chase. They're up with the run rate but England have been taking wickets - this might be a tight finish.

Good start for Aus, seemed like lots of starts in both innings but tough to go on.

Aus batting must have serious depth to have Jonassen coming in at 10.

Cracking chase, but England just didn't quite take enough wickets to keep a lid on the race. Australia were always there or thereabouts.

A good start to the series. I hope every match is this competitive.

True, Fluffy. A very good start to what I expect to be an evenly fought series.

it did look tight. I confess I hadn't realised that this had started yet. Sort of akin to having international cricket played in April in england. Doubtless Aussie weather in Oct is infinitely superior to English weather in April.

Good start for Aus.

So, Aus need to now win either 3 more limited over matches, or 1 and the Test, to retain the Ashes.

16 points on offer.

Probably, although it's been pissing down in Brisbane for the last couple of weeks. I think they were quite lucky that it cleared by yesterday.

The next match is in Coff's Harbour, on the NSW north coast, which should be very pleasant at this time of year. Weather forecast is great.

They're using second-tier grounds, as due to the lower attendance the game can get swallowed up in the cavernous Aussie grounds. Apparently last time they played at the MCG and only about 1000 people showed up, which must have been a bit embarrassing. This means Canberra gets a couple of the T20s in November, so I shall try and get along to one.

cheers, GJ. Only a matter of time when the test will be worth 2 points and the T20's 4 points each :no

I wonder why they only ever play 1 test match? Not a format they normally ever play, I suppose

I do quite like the idea of the women playing before the men, though. It does at least provide an opportunity for an Aussie audience, champing at the bit for the ashes proper to start, to have something to focus on, if they want. An appetiser, if you will. Playing it after the men would have an 'after the Lord Mayors show' feel to it, risking an atmosphere of minimal interest.

Fully agree, Durham. It is serving nicely as an appetiser. being something that snuck on us, it was a welcome surprise on Sunday to see it underway. Also a nice surprise to hear it broadcast on the ABC radio - not their digital service. A great announcement that summer was here - me working in the garden all day, with the cricket entertaining (I assume) the neighbourhood.
