Agreed. A good read. And a lot about how much of what went on was due to off-field issues - a lack of unity and honesty.

Let's hope lessons have been learned.

There is two things in that article that stand out for me.

Firstly how quick Swann is to give excuses and place blame.

Secondly, how the new player to the team thought KP was a proffesional and had nothing bad to say, whilst the old pros seemed to have the issues. It seems like there was a blame game, with not many of the senior pros taking responsibility.

TBH KP probably came out of that tour in the best light which is ironic considering he was the scrapegoat.
downton, Cook, Swann and flower on the other hand did not.

reading that it is isn't really surprising many teams didn't really get on with the england team only really got on with KP.
Reckon if the environment was better during that time england might have actually been far better during that time which is odd to say considering they were number 1 for 6-7 months but they could have had it for 2-4 yrs maybe more, actually probably could have been number 1 for a long period of time considering the likes of Ali and Stokes etc could have been merged better with the likes of Trott, KP, Cook etc.

It sounds like Swann wasn't listened to, KP was isolated and the squad was badly selected. Morale wasn't sustainable partly due to divisions (between bowlers and batters) which have been documented. Younger/newer players didn't feel part of the group and there was nowhere for players to go with grievances or personal concerns (Flower was unapproachable and Cook ostentatious struggling with his responsibilities).

I call that a management failure.

This time, the side doesn't travel with much expectation, so a heavy defeat might be easier to accept, though it could be damaging for the new captain.

But that was a long time ago...

I'd hope England learned from the tour, but I doubt it. Strauss' appointment suggests we have ECB business as usual.

A good outcome for the series would be the emergence of another competent batter.

Yet to make a debut - Foakes, Crane, Overton, Curran
Stoneman, Ball (3 Tests)
Malan (5)
Vince (7)

It is frightening that is half the squad.

Bayliss saying that they wouldn't pick anyone who hadn't played Tests in the last 18 months and we have four players so far in the squad. Don't know who may be called up from the Lions.

As much as I would have liked to see Plunkett in the Ashes squad, the ECB have selected shrewdly in Tom Curran as Finn's replacement. Curran caught my eye in a 2016 CC game for Surrey against Yorkshire with is nagging length and bowling for ridiculously long periods in the sun.

I am also looking forward to see how Craig Overton fares. He was rather hostile at Scarborough this year and his bowling is more suited to the Australian surfaces, huge potential to be a surprise package and a player who would enjoy the battle.

Oz line-up I'm expecting to see in Brisvegas:

Dave Warner
Matt Renshaw
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith
Peter Handscomb
Glenn Maxwell
Matthew Wade
Mitchell Starc
Pat Cummins
Josh Hazlewood
Nathan Lyon
Shaun Marsh (12th man)

Renshaw, Maxwell and Wade will be under the microscope. If all 3 were to lose their spots during the course of the series, Shaun Marsh would probably come in for Renshaw, not too sure about the other two, but the Oz selectors do seem to have a boner for Moises Henriques, although Travis Head could be a bolter, and I'm lead to believe that Cameron Bancroft now has the gloves for WA. Given Wade's slow start to the season, however, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the selectors may bring back Peter Nevill. I guess time will tell.
