I think they should pick Neser, just so that Red doesn't walk away with the Sheffield Shield FL title after only 4 rounds

How are his keeping skills? I know that until recently he wasn't first choice 'keeper, with Whiteman getting the nod.

Gotta assume that he is more reliable than Wade?

Wades keeping has improved a lot. Sure it has improving from a low standard, but he seems competent now. He did well with the gloves in BD and India. The only problem is that his batting has gone the other way.

Like FTS i think he will start the first test, but thats down to a lack of suitable alternatives.

There are loads of alternatives..

Tim Paine - class act
Peter Nevill - surely best gloveman aus have, and more reliable bat than wade..
Same Whiteman
Cameron Bancroft - work in progress but maybe worth a shout
Peter Handscomb - even his glovework is better than wade's!

not true about Handscomb(e), Andy. He makes a fine emergency 'keeper, like Phil Hughes did, but definitely not a first choice option for 1st class/test cricket.

Surprised the ashes hypes isn't that cringe worthy yet probably helps that Sky don't have the rights so not much media interest on their channels for it.

BT must be pushing it though.

There was always a risk there that by increasing the number of encounters, CA/ECB were risking reducing the anticipation for the fixture.

hope I'm wrong, but I can only feel bad vibes. I try to convince myself that Aus have lots of batting issues, which may give England a sniff, but they will no doubt find a Haddin replacement to save them over and over, when England are bowling their 'B' bowlers. I can see only doom for the England batting line up

perhaps Aus will call up Ellyse Perry?

Urg. Despite the win, the England warm-ups and preparation have been pretty horrible. After the Stokes situation, we've lost half the bowling attack to injury, our other allrounder, the batting looks so vulnerable they can't even rack up a big score against a very ordinary CA XI, and England aren't going to get any decent quality opposition before Brisbane (do hosts do this on purpose these days? I recall England didn't exactly roll out the big guns for Australia's warm-ups in 2015).

I am really worried about Brisbane.

Partly a learning experience under the lights. And the bowlers did quite well under those conditions. The big problem is the batting which hasn't fired against attacks way short of the NSW four. No surprise, but England don't look to have the batting to compete.

Any thoughts as to who is most likely to fill the fourth pace bowler boots in Brisbane? Ball will be fit, but if he doesn't play in the next warm up, it's probable he'll be hampered by lack of game time. Overton has the chance to claim a spot. If Anderson is rested for the CAXI match on Tuesday night, Curran will be one great performance away from a debut. Presumably it will take some dodgy prawns for Garton to barge his way into the frame. Crane might be even a longer shot than that.

At the moment, Overton must be a likely starter.

if he does get the gig it'll demonstrate how well bayliss's 'only players who have played test cricket in the last 18 months will be considered' is going

Would have thought Overton did enough in the pink ball game to be the preferred choice as long as he doesn't have a shocker in Townsville. I know the opposition wasn't top drawer but you can only skittle the batsmen that they put in front of you...even if Ball recovers for the Test it would be strange to play him with no real lead up.

I'm less worried about the batsmen than most : true they haven't made any big scores yet but it's only been a two dayer and a twilight game so far - at least they have all had decent time in the middle. Would be hoping for something a bit more inspiring later this week in the last warm up. But it was pretty clear before the team flew out that the batting was both inexperienced and relatively untried so if anything they have done better than they might , with Stoneman and Malan outperforming the known big guns.

Whatever happens in these practice events no one can really predict what will happen when they face Starc and Hazelwood in Brisbane . Plenty of pressure then , of course : but to be honest with Renshaw struggling and a shortage of truly proven class to back up Smith and Warner the home team might be a little anxious ahead of the first match too...

I understand why England supporters on here have deep pessimism as a default setting ; but a lot of Australian cricket people I've spoken to think this will be quite a close series. I'd be more confident if Stokes hadn't got himself into strife in Bristol ; but I still think this England team has the potential to surprise . Of course that will require one or two players "stepping up" : but there is no rule that says they can't , is there ?

I always approach Brisbane Ashes Tests with trepidation (understandably !) but I am looking forward to the series.
