Boys

Doing my calculations for this week and realised I have ballsed up the maths =....sorry Andy but I have severely over calculated your total.

You currently stand on 760.

Apologies

This week will be up within the hour

Amla scoring 50 in second innings as well. If he is scoring so many on such difficult wickets on this series then he will score heavily this year imo.

Virat scored a 40 odd in second innings.

I was anticipating catches for both Virat and Amla. Not in this test, but good to see Amla retain his 1st slip position.

Nobody bought him in IPL auction today though, but I think he might get a bid at base price tomorrow in 2nd round when teams will look to have backup openers. Last year I think he was late replacement after IPL started and he scored two tins averaging 60 in IPL season. His stint in IPL will help me get 800 points if he plays all matches.

Week 4 update (NB: Calculations were done on Saturday so no games on Sunday included)

His timing has been nothing short of incredible. Two weeks ago Shakib Al Hasan sat at the bottom of the table with 0 points. Two weeks later he sits atop the weekly total for the second week running and is only behind JP Duminy overall. The common bond that both these players share is the sheer amount of games they have played in over a comparatively short period of time. Shakib and Duminy have squeezed in five games over the last fortnight which sees them both riding high on the table. With the likes of Joe Root and Aaron Finch about to complete their fifth ODI of the year just behind them, they do seem to have a comfortable lead.

Jofra Archer and Rashid Khan, the wunderkinds of bowling, appear to be unable to operate in tandem. When one of them is in the ascendancy the other underperforms. Last week Archer squeezed into the top ten performers of the week whilst Khan crapped out with a round zero. This week the pair have switched places with Rashid sixth in the table with his five wickets in a week for the Adelaide Strikers, whilst Jofra Archer's paltry 31 points comes from one wicket and a handful of runs in his two games for the now eliminated Hobart Hurricanes. Their relative inconsistency puts them side by side in the overall table just outside the top ten, with Archer claiming a five point lead on his Afghanistani rival.

His performances have not been spoken about with lofty tones in the ODI series between Australia and England, but Mitchell Marsh has been performing solidly for the home side. His above average performances with both bat and ball place him in good stead in the table but he is also going the extra mile with his batting and bowling bonus points with 90 of his 212 points this week coming from strike rate, economy and batting bonus points. He will also have cause to feel hard done by due to the manner of his dismissals in both games this week - sent back for 55 and 32 on the receiving end of some outstandingly high quality return catches.

It seems to be a growing trend of these posts but we are, again, seeing some players we would have expected big things from hugely underperforming. Steve Smith and David Warner have been on this list all January and are only getting themselves deeper into bother. Warner's yield of 21 points from two games - all from runs - is particularly eye opening. AB De Villiers is a player we can join to their ranks this week. He underperformed in the last Test against India and walked away with just 31 runs - 20 of which came from opportunities in the field. Root was also underwhelming this week - only turning up in one of the ODI and getting out for 27. He finds himself outside of the top five of the week for the first time.

Two players who are on a fairly steep upward curve this week, albeit from a pretty dire base level, are George Bailey and Hashim Amla. Both players scored more in the last week than their total runs up to this point in the year. Bailey finally turned it on for Hobart (too late some would add) with two scores in the thirties and with a very healthy strike rate to boot - especially against the Melbourne Stars where he got a 20 ball 32. Amla also did well with cumulative runs of 113 in his two innings in the final Test against India. This puts these players into the top ten for the week and drags Amla into a bunch of South African players in the middle of the overall table.

Andy's week has been ruined; first by my miscalculations and then by a meagre total of 31 from his two players. This leaves the floor open for what is a very tight battle at the top with 6 points between Rich and DC. I am still incredibly proud of my one man team keeping me up there but it is Red Devil Jnr and Adi who have done the real damage this week jumping up the table with impressive scores.

Week 5 update (NB: Calculations do not include the 2nd ODI between South Africa and India)

Could a player this year make more of an impact in one week than the dominance Sunil Narine has shown in the West Indies' Regional Super50 competition? The unlikeable mystery spinner has not played a game since the start of December when he turned out for the Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League but he did not show any sign of rustiness as he scorched a 46 ball 51 for Trinidad and Tobago in the opening game against Barbados. He has since added to that with 10 wickets in three games over five days - his best being a stunning 5-10 over the Combined Campuses and Colleges team. His economy in all three games has been under three and his form must be leaving the West Indies team bitter at the fact that the precocious spinner still refuses to turn out for his national side, outside of major competitions. His 487 points in a week is the highest by an individual player so far in 2018 and catapults him up the overall table, putting him one position above Nathan Lyon - the first cricketer of the week from Week 1. If his dominance in this competition continues who knows how many points he can rack up.

I thought that this might be the year for Kane Williamson to put himself back amongst the top batsmen in the world. A few years ago the four key batsmen of Kohli, Smith, Root and Williamson were setting the cricketing world alight. The first two have accelerated into the stratosphere, the third one has remained treading water whilst the last one....appears to be stagnating. He scored 17 runs across his two T20 games for New Zealand this week taking his run of single figure scores to three in a row. His average for 2018 stands at 31.4 but if you remove his two big scores against Pakistan it is a more worrying 15.75. Williamson needs to use the triangular tournament against England and Australia to turn his year around.

I am still surprised to see JP Duminy at the top of the overall rankings - especially when his transition from domestic cricket back to international cricket ended with a thunderingly disappointing yield of just 12 runs. Despite this lack of form, that began in his final few games in the Momentum One Day Cup, there is only Joe Root who may overtake him in the near future. Shakib is injured, Mitchell Marsh is not selected for the T20 series and Jos Buttler is just too far off the pace. Regardless of his performances this week I still expect to see the unlikely figure of JP Duminy atop the overall list next week.

With Duminy unexpected at the top, who here expected to see David Warner at the bottom? Only Jeetan Patel sits between Warner and the very bottom of the table - and the veteran New Zealander has played 4 less games than Warner. Warner finds himself in the rather ignominious position that George Bailey found himself in for a number of weeks over January; namely scoring more points with his work in the field compared to his batting. Even more gallingly, Bailey now sits seven places above the stand in Australian captain with 129 points separating them.
