This is why we won't win the world cup

Our batsmen seem to lack a brain

Surely after losing 3 wickets in 10 minutes stokes and root cut out the risks and ensure we make 350

Nope

Instead we might make 330 because we tried to make 400

This almost looks like match fixing

Like they are getting out on purpose

Joe root must be very confused as to what is going on

320 now looks far off

Ton up for Root at least. Then he gets out.

Will 320 be enough (if we even get there)?

Bit of spin on offer so we have to hope rashid and moeen bowl well

Looks a road when the seamers are on

The issue more than anything is the mentality of the team, if they don't get early wickets they will be thinking they should have made 375

Badly need the momentum back

The England bowlers are off to a cracking start - bagging both the openers.

NZ 2/2 off the first 4 - England were 22/0.

You'd think at least one of Kane or Taylor are going to have to make a ton from here.

Taylor on track for that ton...

The run rate is steadily creeping up, but NZ have wickets in hand so are still in this. England's spinners can't keep a lid on it. Another close finish could be on the cards.

Amazing fight back from NZ. Didn't think Taylor had an innings like that in him anymore.

At work so didn't see any of it. But obviously certain batsmen played brilliantly and there can't have been much there for the bowlers.

You'd think England should have had at least 350 after the position they were in when Bairstow's innings ended ? Someone said they went for 400 and it cost them 350 ...that was what I had been thinking following on line. Do we condemn the all or nothing approach for going wrong today though , or rejoice that it comes off rather often (as constant comparisons with the "bad old days" remind us ) ?
Again without having seen it : but having promoted Buttler to 4 (arguably a reasonable move - though I am in two minds as I think he is an excellent last five overs player anyway ) it might have made sense then to send Stokes in next to keep swinging ...with Morgan held back to play a more considered role after the two failures . Being smart after the event perhaps ; but I'd suggest the other two are more out and out attack dogs and he can be versatile. Failing that Stokes should have been more circumspect.
Moeen remains totally out of it with the bat apparently. I think Tom Curran should bat higher.
Whatever , 335 wasn't a disaster was it ...fifteen under par ?

Both Kiwi openers out for ducks : you'd fancy a win from there ! Taylor just played a blinder I guess but I wonder if Morgan couldn't have shuffled his bowlers around a bit earlier : Woakes not bowling his quota seems odd ? Sounds as if one or two of the bowlers didn't hit their lengths : is it too early to worry about Wood post-injuries ?

Two all. Series deserves a decider , no ? Hope it doesn't rain...

Wood's record over the past year has been fine. Not so much this winter when only Plunkett has been more expensive. I've read his pace is down. Too soon to read much into it though. Stats for this winter.

Mo deserves credit for his record over the winter as above.

And Stokes is going for less.

Amazing knock from Taylor! What a player and if he does miss the decider then NZ's middle order looks weak, particuarly if Chapman comes back in for him

All they had to do was knock it around for 3 overs then go again, instead root got stranded and left in a situation where he couldn't afford to get out

The new approach is great, but the plan should be to win the world cup, and we won't without occasionally recognising that you have to knock it around and reasses after losing quick wickets

There will be an implosion at some point at the world cup and we will lose
