perhaps it was just a bad dream?

Woakes and Moeen both confirmed as dropped, but the squad includes Vince, Leach and Wood. Livingstone misses out :no

Before the first Test the I read that it was possible that two spinners might play in the second. So that makes it less likely they will go with none. This is the cricinfo team below, with a query over the spinner though.

NZ confirmed with Sodhi in for Astle.

1 Alastair Cook, 2 Mark Stoneman, 3 James Vince, 4 Joe Root, 5 Dawid Malan, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Craig Overton/Jack Leach, 9 Mark Wood, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson

Vince is clearly going to play otherwise Overton would be at seven.

The Hagley Oval has only staged four Tests. Boult has 22 wickets and Southee twenty. And Waggy has 17. In 2/4 Tests NZ went in with all pace attacks. Among spinners only Shakib-al-Hasan (4) and Nathan Lyon (3) have more than two wickets in an innings. Yasir Shah has a 0-fer there. It's really been seem all the way. I was misinformed. Though six of BD's ten wickets were from spin.

For Kiwi spinners, Todd Astle played a Test in Christchurch and took 0-134. Mark Craig 1-88. Captain Kane has a wicket but may have thrown it.

So after scoring 58 they drop a spinner and a seamer, both of whom have excellent records for scoring runs at 7 and 8.

About time they took a sword to our top order instead!

The time they scored 51 in the WIndies they dropped Bell who came back a much stronger and better player.

It would have been a good time to try Livingstone instead of going back to Vince but Thorpe thinks Vince has improved, with his coaching :scared Root wants his old spot back and old roommate.

According to cricinfo Leach will debut, so no Overton.

A long tail, but to be honest I think too much is made of tail-end batting. If your top 7 can't get the job done (which for England they often can't), an extra 30 or 40 from 8-10 won't count for much if the bowlers can't actually take wickets in response.

New Zealand win the toss and have put England in. Hoping to take advantage of the frailty in England's batting and the scars from 58 all out, plus the early start - dew and a tinge of green. That said, the weather forecast is good, so if England can make it through the morning without too much damage (ha!), they could take advantage.

Wood, Leach and Vince confirmed for Woakes, Moeen and Overton. Sodhi to replace Astle for the Kiwis.

England just dropped a player who scored 60% of their runs in the first innings of the last test.

With Ben Stokes apparently still "day by day" as to whether or not he can bowl, and having forgot the last time Wood bowled more than an handful of overs, it looks a fairly unbalanced team.
