I believe you're right. I think Walsh has the most ducks overall, but despite that, he spent about a third of his career batting at 10. I'm not sure who he was batting ahead of - Ambrose generally came in one position above him.

Reon King and Patrick Patterson were both pace bowlers who couldnt identify a cricket bat that was shoved haphazardly into the top of a golf bag..... Walsh in comparison was competent. Martin was also that bad.

There's something wonderfully folkloric about really slow innings.

DK Morrison only eleventh on the list.

I saw a reporter say, either in a report or on Twitter, this morning that the game was just so engrossing despite literally no runs being scored.

I think it's something only fellow cricket tragics can appreciate!

Seem to read that NZ's players had commented after the series they want to play test more, and are sick of T20s.....

England can start by making the New Zealand fixture a biennial event and each series a minimum of 3 tests. Heck in light of recent events I would postpone the 2019 Ashes series and have 4 tests against New Zealand instead, folk would still attend in numbers.

Maybe the comparison could be WI after BCL and Shiv was their last great batter.

Though, JB and Gentle Ben are decent Test bats.

There'll be good players around. Just a matter of finding them.

That's what was so annoying about the fatalism around picking Moeen as the spinner. It was a selectorial white flag.

It's the attendances that don't tally with that. The public is often just happy to follow Tests from a distance, and dip in and out.

Had a few very good years before Windies suddenly decided he was too fat and unfit to play, and dumped him. Think he sued the board successfully for it in the end.

That's what was so annoying about the fatalism around picking Moeen as the spinner. It was a selectorial white flag.

Moeen's initial selection was rather unnecessary as well. Before his debut series, Stokes was fit (not 100% maybe, but certainly fitter than Broad and Prior who were selected) but England decided to punish him for the locker punch. So Moeen was the all-rounder for that series, even though he only bowled occasionally that winter with the white ball teams.

Granted, choosing a spinner at that time was no easy task, I can't say who should have been picked (and it was 4 years ago now), but England made things difficult for themselves the way they did it.

If Leach nails down a place though, it's difficult to see how Moeen fits in outside of Asia and the Windies. We've seen plenty of his batting and whilst he'd be a better option at #3 than Vince, he'd still be too loose to be a specialist batsman.

Point taken, but you have selected the best West Indies batsmen from a ten year period for your example (and I don't think Darren Bravo and Lara ever played together, at least not in tests). Lara also lined up with such batting luminaries as Darren Ganga, Adrian Griffith, Wavell Hinds, Dwayne Smith, Sherwin Campbell, Ridley Jacobs etc. etc., all of whom had averages closer to what Stoneman, Vince and Malan have achieved.

And I know you're not a particular Stokes fan, but he's a fair sight better than Dwayne Bravo.

I'm splitting hairs - I think we can both agree that England's batting is in deep trouble, even if Cook does magically rediscover his form.
