Paine just missed inside edging onto his own timbers! Tim looks nervous, thats three near misses in an over....big lbw shout after, and before he was nearly bowled in the last ball of the following over.....

4th over in a row he fails to knock a single, Lyon is on strike.... might live to regret giving Garry this many balls to face.

Into the 30 min extension now....

Well.... that was out, not sure why the umpire hasnt given it, got two clear sounds, Id bet my life he hit that.....

No edge shown on ultra edge, but what could the sound have been..... bit puzzling that.

Paine edges... short of the fielder at slip..... sums up the day that, so many chances just falling short, Pakistan have had some rotten luck this innings....

Not that it matters..... Australia have done it.

Well that is a huge result for this Australian team. One of their better away results considering the team and the situation it finds its self in. The grit of Langer and a captains knock there from Paine. Almost feels like a victory

Great fight and who knows, bat first in the next test, could be a lot of bowling for the Pakistan bowlers.

Ball falling short in this pitch is no surprise at all. Happened to Pakistan when they batted as well. Slow pitch, going to happen.

Paine is averaging over 50 since he came back into the team. Sure he looks bad most of the time, and a few not outs have helped. But he seems to prize his wicket. He wont get you a 100, but he seems to stick around.

He finds himself in a situation that no one would have expected a year ago, but just maybe he is what Australia needs at the moment.

Abbas when bowling to Khawaja earlier reminded me a lot of Shami v England this summer, where he yet continually did him like a kipper, but each time the ball missed the bat by half a millimeter. No joke, in one spell he must have done him a good 10 times. Abbas also bowled a few lovely cutters that Paine was completely bamboozled by, but didnt carry. The spinners had multiple bat pads or edges not carry, or go so close to the fielders. Probably a good 3 lbws at a guess that went against Pakistan on umpire call for pitching outside off, which when you consider the rules are "is it pitching" and the answer is "yeah, but only 49.9% of off stump", id say is unlucky ( the removal of umpires call margin on these should be considered, but a different story)..... Paine must have inside edged a few that nearly hit the stumps, in fact in one period of a bout 10 balls he was nearly bowled three times. Couple of direct hits would have lead to run outs, one direct hit was very close to being out.... I think Safraz missed two stumpings as well.

Id say the Aussies got a good amount of luck to be honest. Not sure I agree with some of the cricinfo reports, which seem to have Australia batting faultlessly all day. It was just one of those days for Pakistan, nothing went for them, but they did frequently create chances.

Also have to question why Pakistan didnt enforce the follow on. You have a team on the run, they have just collapsed, get them in and bowl them out. Since 2001 when India hit a miracle, teams are scared to enforce it now, I never understand it. Going out to bat again is exactly what Australia wouldnt have wanted to do, and they would have loved pakistan strolling out to waste time. Bat well 3rd innings, you are still left with wondering when to declare, and there is always a tendency to over value how much you need and leave yourself less time.

So you are scared you will get bowled out on a declining pitch, but PAkistan didnt add much more than 150 runs in the 3rd innings. Realistically they would have made about the same, if not more, had they been asked to bat day 5 in the (unlikely/impossible) situation Australia left a target that high. The whole argument is based on that idea, not wanting to chase a low target when the pitch is at its worst..... so instead you throw away an innings throwing the bat, waste time, and do everything your opponent wants you to do?

Never get it. If I was a Cricket Board head or county CEO, Id sack a captain instantly for not enforcing a follow on

The temperature may have been a reason for not enforcing the follow on. Give the bowlers a rest and all that.

This is one of those few times when it would have been great for Aus if the next test started sooner.

Pakistan bowlers have just toiled away for 140 overs and back to back test might have been tough on their bowlers having to front up again. As it is both teams should be well rested for the next match.

Renshaw to come in if fully fit, other than that i don't think anything else will change. Great fight by a team that was expected to achieve nothing here.

Already this is a better result then the last tour. Perhaps Pakistan will allow Australia to bat first this time, since they have had the pleasure of batting first in the last 3 test matches in UAE :rasta
