Ah well...... I suppose that if you can get an MBE for scoring 7 runs, then a knighthood is probably the very least you can expect for 12,000

This must be the first cricketing knighthood for a long time. Sir Beefy was knighted, but I believe that was as much for his charity work as his cricket?

Beefy was the last, I think.... and yes, he did get it for his charity walks for leukaemia

Trust wikipedia to have a whole page devoted to it.

The last English knighthood for services to cricket was Sir Alec Bedser in 1996.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... e_knighted

There's some fairly obscure names on that list - some knighted for services to cricket as administrators or journalists rather than players.

Must be followed by Sir Jimmy if this is just for his cricket career.

Jimmy has already been canonised, so a knighthood feels greedy

This seems a bit unnecessary. Was he that good to justify this?

Have to wonder why a few others missed out if Cook gets one. But you can't fight City Hall.

Maybe he gets a vote on May's deal?

Well he wasnt the best bat in the team during his career (Root and KP, probably even Trott had a better record before the insane quick decline). And his leadership came at a time when a significant portion of fans became massively disillusioned with the game. He wasnt the main reason, but he was certainly part of it.

I preferred Gooch to Cook as well, and he was England's leading run scorer at one time. Has a cricketer ever been knighted at such a young age?

Gooch went to SA.

Cook has the little extras that make him a comfortable fit for a knighthood. The ones that GG didn't have, even if he hadn't taken the rand. Or Thorpey, who didn't do anything like that. I'm not surprised to hear Cook is getting a knighthood. I would if KP got one.

Maybe he'll turn it down, which actually might do something to repair bridges to the disillusioned.

He became very much an establishment cricketer. I guess he is now benefiting from the rewards of those partnerships he protected.
