Random Cricket Thread (International Cricket)

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Interesting talk that cricketers won't be able to use saliva on the ball but can apply sweat.... like they ever followed laws in what they were allowed to do to the ball in the first place. And is there reliable evidence of sweat v spit?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/52714934

What happens when the bowler forgets the present regulation and applies saliva on the ball?

The ICC are allowing sweat but not the ECB.

'The ICC Cricket Committee heard from the Chair of the ICC Medical Advisory Committee Dr Peter Harcourt regarding the elevated risk of the transmission of the virus through saliva, and unanimously agreed to recommend that the use of saliva to polish the ball be prohibited.

The Committee also noted the medical advice that it is highly unlikely that the virus can be transmitted through sweat.

On a hot day with bowlers running in, over after over of course they are going to sweat. Some of them sweat more than others, eg Stokes and Jordan. I can't see how that is going to work.

If you ask me they have all had Covid-19 last year except Anderson and Curran.

This is where I think it gets ridiculous even for me. You either play the game with no restrictions, or you admit there is safety concerns and dont play. All these football teams having to stay in hotels, non contact training, having to social distance benches and coaches on the sidelines, no handshakes or celebrations.... what the hell does it matter if they spend 90 minutes making unrestricted physical contact with each other.

Cricket is obviously different, but if its unsafe or there is a risk, then umpires are still going to be standing with people running past them all day, keepers are still going to be breathing whatever the batsman breathes out standing up to the stumps.... and the idea they can social distance in dressing rooms, sharing toilets and showers and hotels.... they all touch the same stuff, will be around each other.

These kind of token safety things just seem ridiculous to me. If a bowler spits on the ball and has coronavirus, his team mates are going to have it almost certainly, and its going to ahve nothing to do with how they shine the ball.

Well the cricketers (tested and covid free) are going to be in a bubble, not meeting anyone from the outside world (the staff could live in), maybe sweat would be ok. Don't think they need to social distance at all.

Hence the point..it's seems overkill. Either they are isolated all the time, and they can spit all they want, or there is a danger it's got into the camp of a team, and they shouldn't play.

On a different note, there is flat out no way teams and coaching staff will isolate themselves from the outside world for the duration of a tour. Imagine being a prisoner in a hotel for 2-3 months, after a period of isolation of the same length. Can't see players unions agreeing to that

CV19 according to the press can access the body through the eyes. To me that suggests doubt about the sweat/spit division in risk. OK, I'm sure they asked people who know. But as anyone who has ever seen a horror film will remember, people hear what they want to hear.

T20 World Cup in October-November 2020 postponed to October-November 2022. The 2023 ODI World Cup in India will now be held in October-November instead of February-March window

In short....seems like World Cup has been postponed for IPL.

Creating a bio-secure setting of 16 teams is going to be a logistical nightmare. Normally ICC event tournaments have a 15 man squad, this would have to be doubled in size so any replacement players are already quarantined. Do Ireland and Papa New Guinea have that strength in depth? They would literally be calling up club players as reserves.

Also Cricket Australia are skint and would miss out on much needed ticket revenue. Rescheduling tournaments just make sense, if anything England have an advantage of playing in an Autumn Cricket World Cup.

England invited to tour Pakistan early next year. Maybe reciprocal for Pakistan touring one of the global covid hotspots this summer? Wonder how many of the England side would tour? I remember a few English players went over there for a domestic competition.

A classic case of not making the most of the early promise. He should have been an international powerhouse of a bowler. Poor choices and squandered talent
