you know things are desperate when a club feels they have to turn to him. Leeds are going down, I think, no matter what they do. They rescued themselves on the final day of last season, didn't strengthen but weakened themselves letting Phillips and Raphinha go. This time, when they do go down, they'll lose Harrison and Gnonto too

This has been the subject of much ridicule, but I dont think its a ridiculous move (2nd manager hire aside). Big Sam knows how to set up a team to make them difficult to beat, and Leeds really need that atm.

Although it might be too late. I think its too close to call between all that group of 4 teams.... I have a feeling Leicester will stay, but Everton/Leeds and Forest all have equalish chances of going down.

Only Real Madrid can compare to Liverpool's referee benefits. I think bad officiating in Liverpools favour is worth 30 points a year... average team elevated to greatness by referees.

and yet you'd never know listening to the way Klopp goes on about them.

maybe this is Klopp emulating Fergie to browbeat the officials into swinging things his team's way

he's started the Fergie mind games about the top 4 placings, so maybe he does think he's Fergie re-incarnated

I thought the contact was minimal and initiated by Nunez in the very corner of the box whilst going away from the goal. I'm not convinced the defender had much to do with it. Now maybe that is a penalty.... or maybe it was one of those 'clever' pieces of play that turns nothing into a penalty, but it was awarded immediately, without hesitation and the criticism seems to be that either VAR didn't check the decision to see if the ref made a mistake or the check was cursory.

As always the argument is.... would it have been given if it was the other way around? I know what I think

Maybe I'm an old cynic...

Brighton have just been awarded a pen in the 96th minute of their match with Man Utd and scored it to win 1-0. I'd have put money on that not being given and VAR not bothering to have a look

Man Utd continue their trend of losing in the league away to teams they turned over at Wembley.... maybe that's a decent trend to have

100% pen. Don't think Shaw even argued.

Was handball in the area, quite blatantly deliberate. Realised he wasn't going to win the ball in the air and stuck his hand up to deflect it.

Surprised he didn't get carded, to be honest.

Well, after Mitoma twice burned Wan Bissaka and was rugby tackled to the ground in the box, and Antony put a thigh high scissor tackle on McAllister without being sent off, the ref maybe felt Man United had expended all the big team bias he could give, without him being ultra panned after the game.

Still, Luke Shaw punching the ball away from Lewis Dunk about to put a header potentially in the net was deemed not to be worthy of a card.... when the only question should have been whether denying Dunk a free header from 12 yards was a clear goal scoring opportunity, and therefore a straight red, or just a yellow for a clearly deliberate hand ball.... Either way, Shaw had just been booked for taking out Enciso, and clearly should have been sent off. The fact he wasn't speaks volumes about how big teams get such a leeway from referees. No way if that is Webster or Dunk at the other end, he doesnt send them off.

I thought the award of the penalty should have been grounds to start a full blown inestigation into match fixing. Fulham's players have said the referee even told them after half-time when he seen the replay, that it was never a penalty. There is zero contact, nor is Diop's attempt to play the ball dangerously stopping Nunez from challenging the ball.... Nunez should have been booked for diving, and them play on.

Which is what will happen at the weekend when a Southampton player does exactly the same.

But no one will be surprised at all that LiVARpool got another decision that cannot be explained save them from losing points. The referee's have been trying their best to ensure Liverpool make Europe, and have been very successful. Well done to them.

today the gossip pages insist that Newcastle are trying to sign Neymar. 2 days ago Newcastle were trying to sign Ronaldo

It's worse than bollox, it's lazy, lazy journalism.

The whole point of what Newcastle are trying to do, is to build a team.... a good team.... made up of good players that are giving everything, all pulling in the same direction, on broadly similar money and with no egos. Why anyone thinks that they'd be interested in the names being bandied about is beyond me.... and is ssiping me off a bit too. In a couple of days they'll be reporting that Newcatle are trying to sign Messi...... no they aren't

Newcastle are more likely to be interested in Jack Harrison, Wilfred Gnonto, James Ward-Prowse, James Maddison, Kieran Tierney with perhaps an interest in Raphinha or Richarlison if they can get them at the right price and on the right sort of money. More than anything, any player that comes in will have to want to be part of a project rather than a big pay day
