Film star and post-WWII cultural icon Brigitte Bardot dies at 91. Her 1956 picture ...And God Created Woman is a landmark in liberated screen sexiness, but also did some arthouse, like Godard's Contempt, and Cluzot's excellent La Vérité.

A support role in Les Grandes Manoeuvres directed by René Clair is my favourite of her many early comedies. When she became famous enough to be known just by her initials.

Must have been difficult to live for so many years in the eye of a media hurricane.

I went to St Tropez a number of years ago. The town had images of her everywhere, literally everywhere. Many of them were silhouettes. They were clearly very proud to have her

Quite right!

After she retired from acting, Bardot became a supporter of Le Pen and the far right.

Yes, unforgivably.

She spent her life and her wealth in a campaign against cruelty to animals. It doesn't offset her racism, but it is also true.

I knew of the former, but not the latter - I was confused by your earlier comment.

Oh.

Bardot's death leaves just the three survivors from Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.

Chubby Checker, Bob Dylan and Bernie Goetz.
