I did not recognise the name when it was announced on the radio this morning, but my wife did. I figured it out in 5 seconds or so.

Very well respected man. Former Australian of the Year - which is a far more prestigious award than what it might sound; and is also no guarantee of widespread respect*.

*how Grace Tame has been received by a huge section of the population after being awarded the same honour is a great illustration of this.

I went to a Hockney exhibition in Mons a few months ago, as the father in law was a big fan and my wife treated it as a sort of pilgrimage for his sake after he recently passed. I really like some of his work, others not so much.
