Shanks

Anderson may well be there the fact hes been around the England camp for so long I keep thinking hes a lot older than he really is, I remember seeing him in the 2001/2002 ODI series against Australia, and I keep forgetting he was only 20.

Trott will be there. One bad series doesnt a bad player make.He will be back in form soon.

Cook

Trott
Bresnan
Finn

Broad

With Bopara and Samit if they remain consistent being added to that.

The remaining places will be open to much flux over the next 12 months, I would say the remaining places in the squad could be taken up by Davies, CK, Buttler, Bairstow, Taylor, Hales, Briggs, Borthwick, Kerrigan, and any others that make a case over the next 18 months either through T2O or FP at county level.

So a Possible Squad would be

Batting : Cook, KP, Trott,Morgan, Samit, Two of Hales/Bopara/Taylor
Keeping : Two of CK/Buttler/Bairstow/Davies
Bowling : Bresnan, Finn, Broad, Meaker/Dernbach, Two of Swann/Briggs/Borthwick/Kerrigan

If you take the view that The spare keeper can be used as a batsman then you would only take 1 of Hales,Bopara or Taylor and add in an extra Bowling resource.

I have no idea why people are writing Anderson off ODIs.

He should have over 300 ODI wickets by then. Our most experienced ODI bowler in Australia. Strangely Broad has never played an ODI in Australia.
I expect Woakes and Stokes to also be in the team.

i think they are both strong contenders for the squad but its gonna be tough fitting everyone into an XI

i think those two will end up competing with bopara and patel for the 2 all-rounder spots, depending on whether we want to play just one spinner in aus/NZ

In Australia and more so,in NZ,a seam bowling allrounder would be essential so I hope Stokes gets a chance at some stage. The choice of the allrounder next summer should depend on the conditions. No point picking Samit on a greentop or Stokes on a turner.

Is Stokes good enough to bat at seven or higher?

yeah , they had him batting at 6 last year in the games he played even tho he couldn't bowl, hes more of a batting all-rounder. averages around 43 in FC cricket i think

I'd always want to have at least two players who can competently bowl spin in an ODI side regardless of where it is being played.

England have to focus on building an experianced team, with a squad who have proper international experiance around the core players.

2015 may seem a long time away, but ultimately we have a finite number of matches between now and then to get a side together than can provide options and cover, as well as a sense of being a team.

Every ODI series has to be viewed in that context or we are simply once more going to find ourselves out gunned in terms of experiance with no clear and defined plan of what is going on.

We have a total of 13 ODI series totaling around 65 ODI's between now and the 2015 world cup, 15 of those are in Australia and NZ as well (10/5 split respectively).

That should be plenty of time to get a core playing XI and give fringe players opportunity to prove thier worth without unsettling the core too much.

Only 65 ODIs, that is going to make life tough for England when you consider the current side has played a single series as a unit.

Getting that unit into a solid team combined with highlighting weaknesses, improving on those areas as well as building a solid periphery around the current team is going to be tough.

you cant have it both ways tho M-S , you cant have the "best" XI playing together all the time to get used to playing as a unit and also have the backups getting the necessary game time so if they are called upon they dont just look like rabbits in headlights

thats why i maintain that it was the right thing to do to make changes for the 4th ODI the other day

we need a squad of 15-16 players all with game time under their belts and if people like stokes, woakes, taylor, bairstow, buttler, briggs, borthwick etc etc are going to be part of that squad then we have to find a way to get them games

i also think we do have to be a bit more ruthless when it comes to replacing people that are underperforming, i am not saying we chop and change after one poor game or one poor series but we certainly cant afford to give guys 30+ matches to see if they are good enough otherwise we end up back in exactly the same position we were before the last world cup with either being forced to stick with either players who were out of form but we hoped would come good or guys who never really looked good enough in the first place but at least had experience because the only alternative was to throw new caps in at the deep end.

It is not a case of having it both ways at all though Rich, it is a case of having your best XI set and playing in the majority of matches as a unit and at the same time having two players identified as the next men in each of the units within the ODI side and having them play as part of the whole regularly within this time frame.

I may write a longer peice explaining what I mean by this later on, but to attempt a quick summary:

The first team should be set for a period of 12 months, our first team should be the line up that played the first ODI against Pakistan considering of course there was an injury to Bresnan:

Cook
KP
Trott
Bopara
Morgan
CK
Patel
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Finn

This is our first team for the next 12 months, they will play the majority of all ODIs we play in that period, but in every series we will rotate one player in each unit with a player who is listed as a squad player, so for example if we play a three match series, then the first team would play at least one of them as a team ideally two, and in one match you would bringing a player from each of the squad units, after a 12 month period you reassess who should be in the first team.

E.g.

Split the team into:

Top Order

Cook
KP
Trott

Middle Order

Bopara
Morgan
Patel
Kieswetter

Bowlers

Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Finn

Along side this you have 2 or three players who match each part

e.g. (this is just a quick example!)

Top Order

Bell
Hales

Middle Order

Taylor
Stokes
Buttler

Bowlers

Briggs
Anderson
Dernbach

Id bet Woakes is there in 2015. By then he will be batting 5 or 6 for Warwicks (might be at 6 this summer) and his one day bowling will have improved. And if Stokes bowling come on - Im guessing he will be in by then for his batting anyway - we will really have some options. We'll bat very deep and wont be carrying a 5th or 6th bowler.

Be nice if one of the inevitable emergees is a left arm quick

We've practically won it already.

i would rather woakes played the longer form of the game to be honest...yes he is a good prosepect, but i think there's much better bowlers ahead of him in odi cricket.
