The enigma that is Kevin Pietersen

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

I don' believe they want him to say sorry in public simply say that he has apologised. So far everything has come via his agent.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

To be honest I don't really see why anything needs to be done in "public".

Agree with that. ECB are just trying to make it look like they've dealt with the situation and achieved something.

To be honest they have actually come off in great shape from all this from a results perspective - They've made KP back down from all his demands, secured his services in all three formats, made a solid precedent that foriegn domestic competitions will never take priority over International cricket, bashed KP down to size and actually if he comes back pulled off something that quite a lot of people thought would be very difficult.

I dislike their methods but they've done pretty well for themselves if it all comes off.

And they've isolated and demonised a long serving player in doing it. But you're right, they have got what they tried to achieve. Though for some, that will be at the expence of its reputation.

I think we've had more than enough pages for all opinions on the ECB and their methods to be aired Arthur and including mine which are quite close to your's. However if you step back and look at it, the entire mess has left the ECB in pretty much their ideal position with regards to KP. Does the end justify the means is a very seperate question.

The proof of the pudding is whether or not he now justifies his reselection.

I don't think he should waltz back into the ODI side or the T20 side, however I think he should be allowed to come straight back in to the test side.

There are some things for which an apology can never suffice.

It seems the ECB may be on the verge of "bottling it" and creating a very dangerous precedent viz à viz player behaviour.

it gives them the obvious option of moving trott to open with bell at 3 and KP slotting back in at 4

whether that is a sensible thing or not i am not sure about

Or having Root / Compton at 1 and Patel at 6 / 7 which would make more sense to me at least.

Depends on whether they want Bairstow or Root / Compton to play.

that would be my side

think i said the same thing either earlier in this thread or on the india tour thread a couple of weeks ago

just having KP back gives them the option of opening with trott even if we might not agree with it

ECB want KP to apologise for the recession, the sliding ratings of X Factor and Man Utd losing at home to Spurs last Saturday.

Do we care?

It looks like it. Whether we care or not, I don't think many will be surprised.

The message received will be that if you're thought good enough, you'll get away with anything.

KP might have got a rest from summer ODIs as wanted, but at the expense of a central contract and a place in the World Twenty20 squad.

If KP is really committed in winning his England place back, he'd forego next years IPL and score runs on the board in county cricket like everyone else.
