Or perhaps it was Liyanage. Names of Lankan bowlers confuse me.

Ray Price has retired. Was once ranked number 2 in ODIs...without doubt Zimbabwe's best ever spinner. 100 ODI wickets with an economy of under 4.

Argentina do poorly again. Cricket was once a big sport in Argentina, and supposedly a game with Uruguay was one of the early international fixtures.

Was only 6 years ago since they were in WCL2.

Interesting old, if rather sad, tale here; how can it all go wrong like this?

Just for fun, I suddenly remembered Akram's spell to Trezza on a dead as a dodo track at Lahore at the fag end of his career in 2000. At that time, he was bowling at about medium pace and in the first innings, he looked a pale shadow of his former self. He still bowled with superb control, but Wasim bowling at 80mph? Well, something seemed to be wrong somewhere.

I don't know if Nass or someone sledged him, as in the 2nd innings just from a few paces and with a whiplash action, he made that dead track seem like a pitch on fire. Poor Trezza, as he got a barrage of bouncers and vicious yorkers. One of them smashed his helmet too. Finally, with a full delivery he trapped him dead in front. I don't think we will see another bowler like Wasim. I mean even in the first innings he bowled from a few paces, but in the 2nd innings with a similar run up, he was bowling at 90mph. Only if he didn't have diabetes.

The scorecard for the match. A frightening spell of 6 overs just from a few paces :)

This story was one of the Guardian's Twenty Ashes Memories leading into the series. I think someone wrote a book on the sad lives of cricketers on retirement, reckoning there is something in the game that leads to melancholy. Apparently an unusual number of ex cricketers kill themselves.

Could be the other way round, AC: those who tend toward melancholy or suicide are those who are most likely to take up cricket. Cause and effect... curious though, either way.
