well done to Sunderland, but can anyone explain to me why Man Utd hadn't won on the away goals rule at the end of the 90 minutes of normal time?

It's been bugging me all day

There may well have been. I just don't remember there being one.

On another note - On the unlikely scenario that Man U win the CL but finish outside the top 4 in the PL, am I right in thinking they wont be able to defend the trophy next season? There was controversy when Liverpool won it a few years back but can't remember what the outcome was.

Liverpool were allowed to defend it, but I think they changed the rules after that.
