I can just see Giles Clarke at the press conference.

The media already know it's Moores and want to know what the hell the ECB are playing at.

"Well you didn't want Ashley Giles did you?" Says Clarke "So we took this on board and appointed someone else instead".

At this point Clarke lets out an evil laugh. You know the one - the same one as Vincent Price does at the end of Michael Jackson's Thriller. However Clarke doesn't quite do it as well as the master and almost starts to choke as he falls back off his chair.

Clarke looks embarrassed as he gets up and croaks to the journos "You've got Moores and serve you right". He then quickly leaves the conference and asks someone for a drink of blood water.

Moores might do well with a relatively young side, a main issue previously was him treating seasoned international players like county players.

I wonder how his Cricket Manager results have been.

It is amazing how some seem to know exactly how Moores treated his players.

I hope he does well. He wasn't doing too badly when he stepped down (with some dignity) from the coaching role, in contrast to Pietersen's stepping down from the captaincy at the same time. It should be obvious now, the extent of Moores' problems at that time.

I suppose it may mean a return for Prior, though.

While I am glad it is not Giles and that England have made the commitment to moving away from the Flower era, I still don't rate Moores as a Coach. There are some positives however, he has shown the ability to bring players in to a side and develop them over his career which is exactly what England are going to be doing over the next year or two. His involvement in the County game over the last few years will also give him a good perspective on the abilities of those players who have been on the fringes of the England side without ever breaking in.

At least we have two relatively soft tours coming up for him to get his feet under the desk, though I would not be terribly suprised if we fail to beat India later on this summer.

With the rebuild job so huge, I doubt he will last long due to his previous reign. Probably shows the nature of all the ecb problems they gave him the job, despite splinters thinking I hero worship him, I do think a new man would have got mire time naturally.

I would have given it to Robbo personally but I don't think it was a bad move, and that is probably the thinking. Let him fail and sack him easily in a year, bring someone else into the job when it's more appealing to

I also think for a temporary measure the right selections will be made for upcoming series. If Moore's can leave a squad which is strong for another coach then that is a bonus, and I personally think no one else in the game has his track record of picking or seeing qualties in players.

What position is Giles now in, has he been sacked or is he still one day coach?

Downton said he was no longer in employment and free to find a new job ( as soon as they sort compensation ), Moores has taken over the entire setup.

Moores' appointment may indicate some degree of regret on the part of the ECB that events forced them to part company earlier and some recognition of how wrong they may have been at the time.

One of the benefits of appointing a coach, even if ephemeral, is a period of optimism. This seems to be an appointment that strangles that possibility. Concerns about Downton's role expansion and Flower seeming to be in charge of the coaches does nothing to create a sense of England moving into a new era which has learned from the failings of the last couple of years. It is an appointment that excites no one, a coach who has previously failed doing the same job. I imagine he will have a difficult to time convincing the players to believe in him. Maybe the media too.

There's a film called 'Last man standing' a rather violent film at that. Cook seems to be that man in the England set up, surrounded by casualties. One has to wonder what he did so well to be only one to retain the confidence of the ECB.

How it's possible to say that an international cricket coach had failed in the job, when so much is outside of his control and so much is questionable about the need for the role, as currently defined, is beyond me.

Some would say that Moores seemed to do little wrong when he held the job previously, even though he had the misfortune of having Pietersen in the squad.

There seem few reasons why anyone should get excited about the appointment of a new person to such a role and it is only important for the players to believe in themselves. The media will continue to say whatever they think will sell. Moores' appointment will make no difference to that.

In fairness to Moores he was England coach at a time when Michael Vaughan was deteriorating as a player and captain, whilst Pietersen won few games as England captain.

This time round it's a different set of circumstances, who knows we may see the real Alastair Cook as a captain rather than toeing the line. Also County Cricket matches will be fiercely contested with so many talented players, trying to impress Moores and earn a place in the England squad.

It will be an interesting time for English cricket. We have, for the Sri Lanka series, only four names on the team sheet at present: Cook, Bell, Anderson and Broad. The scope this gives Moores could be a double edged sword, on one hand he can pick the team he wants from pretty much the ground up, however his selections are going to be heavily scrutinised by all and sundry and rebuilding to such an extent is a massive task for any coach.

We've yet to see how Cook is going to take on any leadership role in this process, or to what extent Downton is going to want a say. Both of them could make life very difficult for Moores. I do think that the key strength Moores brings to the table is identifying talent and getting it into the side, which is pretty much his entire job description at present.

There is potential for England to come back very strongly, but poor performances will bring Moores under huge pressure.

I wonder about Moores getting squeezed between players who might see him as a failed international coach who couldn't form working relationships with the team, and a gathering of management with rather vague or changing job descriptions in Flower, Downton, Whitaker and people in the ECB. I suspect the press will be amenable to polishing Flower's reputation by making any failures very much post-Flower and in contrast to the continual success (until Brisbane) that we have been told was Flower's record.
