The best left back in the world has quit international football.

Like every other Cole that has ever played the game, Joe, Carlton, Andy..............overrated.

Don't agree at all. Ashley Cole was underrated if anything, at his prime in his mid to late 20's he was hands down the best full back in the world, he could attack and go forward, and was as solid as they came in defence.

Cole's delivery in his latter years was poor, but he was magnificent between 2003ish and 2010ish.

He had quite a good shot.

Unfortunately it was usually with an air rifle.

For supposedly such an attacking full back how on earth can he play 107 times for England and not score once.

He was also the most embarrassingly one footed player I have ever seen play the game. They term your wrong foot as your swinger, that would have been a generous description in his case!

Englands best player of the last 10 years. Most consistent and really their only true world class player when at his peak.

Still has plenty to give, and a tough choice not taking him to the world cup. I understand why, but if Baines gets injured, would you rather Cole came on or Shaw?

Talking of Baines. Good at going forward but imo Cole is still better defensively, and we will be on the back foot in most games, I would think.

Ashley Cole is one of a few England players of the last 20 years that has been genuinely world class season after season. Probably couldn't really justify taking him given his lack of games though.

Lack of games might have been a good thing?

Possible lack of match fitness? He's hardly played this calendar year.

Not sure that would make much difference, but I'm no expert on fitness. I would have probably taken him, but am quite happy with Shaw, who is apparently a good prospect.

Didn't look great in the 2nd leg v Atletico where they lost 3-1.

Full backs nowadays have to get up the touchline and cover huge distances. Without the games under his belt, and his increasing years, he cant offer much going forward, and it was right to take Luke Shaw over him.
