I'm not Pardews biggest fan, but I had this same discussion with a bloke the other day.

With the owner unwilling to spend, and selling off the best players, who is there that, A: Will take the job ?? B: improve them with the resources ??

Pullis MIGHT be able too, but it would be an expensive risk, Newcastle has the PERFECT opportunity to sack him last season, compensation free when he headbutted the Hull player, and declined.

With all the departures from Saints i thought they would struggle this year. But they have bought well and look a very good team.

Chealski at present, look pretty unstoppable. Maybe not as tight at the back, and some thinking Terrys legs have gone.

Had a very easy start, and the next few games should not be to bad either. Chance to get some momentum before they play the teams they are challenging for champions league places.

The lure of Champions League football, coupled with the incorrect belief that losing Cortese and Pochettino meant that we no longer had any ambition, meant that there was little we could do but sell those players.

The board simply managed to situation the best they could. Get cracking fees for the players, reject advances for non-Champions League teams, and reinvest that money on decent players.

Ok we have only had four games so far, but of the new signings:

Forster looks better than Boruc
Bertrand looks slightly weaker than Shaw defensively, but much better going forward
Tadic looks like he could be equally as creative and influential as Lallana
Pelle looks like he could be equally as creative, influential and a threat in front of goal as Lambert
Long gives us something which we didn't have last season once we loaned Osvaldo out: a third PL striker
Alderweireld looks strong defensively and very comfortable on the ball, so potentially a perfect and direct replacement for Lovren, whilst also providing the RB cover for Clyne that Chambers previously provided. He also brings WC, CL, La Liga experience with him.
Gardos we have hardly seen, but hopefully he will give us something else which we also didn't have last season: a third PL CB. (Yoshida should never be more than a fourth choice)

Added to that Ward-Prowse is, naturally, a year older. And I have every faith that he will turn out to be as equally good as any of our recent graduates (with the obvious exception of Bale), given time.

The fact that we still have Rodriguez to return from injury is quite exciting. And our other new signing, Mane. When Utd and Liverpool have all their players available, I wouldn't be surprised if Lallana and Shaw don't actually get too many league starts. So if we do match our achievements from last season, or maybe even beat them, then it would be only natural to wonder if the two of the decided to jump ship just slightly too early.

We're pretty much in love with him already.

Bertrand now has more assists at home this season than Shaw got over the whole of last season at home.

I still have a lot of faith in LVG but he badly needs a win today. Anything less than 3 pts vs QPR at home with a close to full strength side would be frankly embarassing.
