Only caught about 20 minutes play earlier, which was 20 minutes of McCullum's knock. Not an innings of a number five, when his side were in a dominant position, and were looking to bat as long as possible.

They weren't looking to bat as long as possible, they were looking to extend their lead and put pressure on the bowlers, and it worked.

Well they should have been looking to bat on. The fact they are still out there, suggests they want a big lead. The kiwi's won't want to be chasing too many on the last day.

Its a bowlers pitch today, get as many as you can, as quick as you can.

I am watching the highlights and I am not impressed by McCollum's innings.

then again there is a reason he averages only 38 in test cricket. In contrast Ross Taylor averages over 45.

I'd imagine he probably is bothered, what with being captain and all.

Also worth remembering it's not his fault Mark Wood couldn't keep his foot behind the line, Bell can't catch, English fielders can't hit the stumps and Gary Ballance's feet are made of concrete and lead. He's not out, which is his job.

There wasn't a ring AC, a mid off and an extra cover can hardly be called a ring, they're all in the slip cordon.

most of the english media have on twitter.
They all think it was a ridiculous decision and should be out.

Geoffrey boycott said it clearly bounced too. This Joe-root-can-do-no-wrong attitude by the English media is getting annoying now.

But Root is The Golden Boy, he can do no wrong. Been the same for a while now, I'm convinced the only reason Compton was dropped was because the media were desperate to see Root open in the Ashes that summer.

weird thing is only the written media thinks it was out, tv comms and radio comms all seem to agree it bounced first.

basically root claimed an low catch, umpires gave a soft decision of out and third umpired found enough evidence to suggest the ball bounced before the catch and everyone apart from the written media agrees with the decision.

Good to hear the third umpire explaining his decision. Just a shame it was the wrong decision.

But surely it is out….

I re tweeted some good tweets that explained why it was the right decision.
Some heavy blinkers being worn by the people who think Rod Tucker got that review wrong

Some think those always carry without fail and won't consider otherwise. Tiresome.

Was obvious from the very first angle that it was short, they're just making themselves look daft

I thought Hussain and Warne explained it really well why it bounced first because of root hand position, basically with root not have his hand under the ball it was impossible for it to bounce up from his hand so it could only bounce up from the turf.

Not sure why Newman still thinks it should be out.

Watling was 'caught' by Root; the onfield umpires weren't certain it had carried so referred it to the TV umpire.

Apparently the procedure now is that the onfield umpires indicate whether or not they think a catch has carried and their instinct will only be overruled by the 3rd umpire if the replays provide conclusive proof they are wrong. In this instance the onfield umpires were minded to give it out and the first few replay angles were of no use only for the last one to strongly suggest the ball hit the ground so the TV umpire gave it not out.

Looked like the correct decision to me although it could be argued that the pictures weren't 100% conclusive.

most people ruled it out since root hand were not under the ball so it was impossible for that to happen.
I might try and see the highlight later to see it again.

yeah the only argument that sticks is if it was 100% conclusive but then the last picture did strongly suggest the ball bounced and root finger/hand were not under the ball either in that frame so it only really meant one thing.

Actually liked the way their dealt with it today, normally the process of low catches is really bad and often they get the wrong decision or give the safe option of not giving it out.
at least the soft decision rule will stop batsman always getting the benefit of the doubt.
