23 years ago England went from 270/1 to 320 all out against Pakistan at Headingly.

Pakistan were so impressed with that collapse that they've tried to do it themselves on a regular basis since.

Yesterday England were doing well for most of the day, today they have started pporly, although Broad and Wood are demonstrating what the middle order should have been doing earlier in the session.

I wonder if a similar thing isn't happening as it did with Eoin Morgan, Adi. Morgan did that dip as the ball was delivered (and still does it to a lesser extent) and it logically disorientated his judgement of length. . Ballance jumps back into his crease as the ball is bowled (it's more than a trigger movement, his whole body leaps back into the crease)
and that must surely scramble his feeling for length.

Still, you're not a failure until you've failed, and that hasn't happened yet. But when he finds runs hard to come by, as all do at times, critics won't say it's form, they'll call it technique. So this criticism won't go away.

Trigger movement is something which i never found useful practically. If i think more of this (trigger movement) which was untaught or a negligible topic/skill but now it is a trend gaining more usage, it still sounds as a negative change than a beneficial one for a specialist batsman. I say that because it will make the stance totally useless. Second point against is it that if the trigger movement is going to be similar for all lengths, or for all pitches with different bounce it is going to cause trouble. Stance is what gives you balance and position to play the ball depending on the line, length etc. What does the trigger movement help in. For example suppose if the ball is full pitched and the batsman is using the back foot trigger on all deliveries against full pitching bowler, how is it going to help him. It just gets him into a wrong position ball after ball.

I will try to look for the trigger movement when i get to watch his innings next time. But like i write trigger movement above, if he is using whole body in trigger movmenet unlike the front foot only (like some batsman) then it can cause more problems

Morgans trigger movement was probably more apparent in ODI cricket than in test matches. One can correct me if this observation is wrong.



Yes, i 100% agree that having a good technique is important. When in bad form technique gains much more importance than when in good form. He has the front and back foot technique imo. He does not lacks it at all. The trigger movement is a concern though if he is using the trigger movement for every ball bowled. Hashim Amla and has been using the makeshift movement to off stump and he is successful. Graeme Smith had similar make shift movement and he was good batsman too but then Zak and others started to target the gap between bat and pad that the makeshift movement created or the chance of LBW. Rahul too started using the front foot makeshift movement and it created problems for him. It becomes very difficult to use two movements (2 if in case makeshift is being used and one more movement is required to adapt to change in line , length) in such few seconds. Any pre decided activity before the bowler releases the ball or before the line and length is judged by batsman is non beneficial. Keep it simple with one movement and whatever movement is required make after the line and length is analyzed. If the concentration is of good quality then the reflexes are good enough to tackle the length etc on basis of a good stance as a platform for reflex.
