I reckon he was hoping Johnson was going to get them up to a 600 lead in around 20 minutes after tea and then would have declared, but didn't mess about once he got out.

Clarke is pretty good at messing with your head with early unexpected declarations. I was at Kensington Oval where Clarke declared the Aussie first innings total 20 runs short of the Windies one, and then his bowlers proceeded to skittle out the shell-shocked WI batsmen in the second innings....

You could say it worked with England today, but then again we don't seem to do steady starts in any circumstances these days.
